G50 Ring Gear

I need help with fitting the ring gear to a G50 87-89 pressure plate. Ive never owned one of these before so dont have an old one to compare to. Its obvious it needs to be pressed on but the area it would fit on is much wider than the ring gear itself. So how do I know how far it needs to be pressed on? Also what holds it on and stops it spinning when starting the engine? If anyone has any pics of the G50 pressure plate with the ring gear installed it would be a big help.

Thanks Steve

I remember hearing that you have to heat the ring gear...

I would put the ring gear in the oven and the presseure plate in the freezer

HI Steve you should have replaced the flywheel for the bigger G50 one to take the larger clutch assembly, and the ring gear bolts on as the 915 clutch one fits, through the 9 fixing bolts.

Hi Mike

There are no bolt holes in the ring gear at all and the ring gear is much larger than the section that takes the bolts, it is almost as wide as the widest part of the pressure plate making it look like its a press fit to the OD of the pressure plate. The only problem with this is that there is nothing to indicate where on the OD of the pp the ring gear should fit as the area it could fit is probably twice the width of the ring gear if you see what I mean. I will post some pics when im home from work.

Unless they sent me the wrong gear?

Steve

The ring gear simply slips over the clutch housing. It's a very light press fit. So you can just tap it on lightly with a hammer and socket extension. Here's a Porsche Tech Tip from the famous 74-89 Parts and Tech Ref Manual

You push it on until it bottoms-out on the surface of the clutch housing. What holds it in place are the nine long M8 cheese head screws (torque to 25 Nm) used to attach the clutch housing to the flywheel.

Here's a picture of it installed, taken from the Bentley Manual

edit............................

If you don't have holes in your ring gear, you have the wrong one.

Heres a pic of the ring gear they sent me now ive had a better chance to look at it its obvious its the wrong part. The hole in the center of it is nearly as big as my bell housing.

Now for my next problem, I think theres something missing from my throw out bearing. I have 4 various rings that have come with it, 1 thick cast ring 2 thin shim type rings and a big star washer type ring all these rings fit loosely over the TOB so I carnt see how it can possibly be held in place do I have something missing?

HI Steve on the photo of the ring gear just on the right side of the photo is a ring, is that the circlip??? and you will require to fit both the shims to the release bearing (turbo has only 1 ), then the finger spring (fingers down to the bearing/shims) so as you fit the pressure plate and you push it down it is spring loaded, then the large washer with the flat face and the taper/circlip cutout to the top, push down on the pressure plate and fit the circlip, check it is fully engaged and it is ready to go. any prob's give me a ring.

regards mike

Hi Mike I found the retaining ring inside the box full of paper shreadings they sent my parts in, the original clutch box was a bit battered and ripped so it must have come out during shipping. Was lucky because I nearly chucked that in the trash before I went to work yesturday and it was bin day. Now I just need to sort out this ring gear lord know what they sent me but the bag has the right part number on it.

Steve
