Performance Chip???
 

I am looking at performamnce chips and the one by Steve Wong seems to be popular. Are these chips worth the money??? I am also looking at changing my air flow by installing a different air intake system. I found one on ebay (Item number: 230012546303) by Ram Filter. Any comments and direction on these two issues would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 1986 911 Targa.

On a seperate note, being new to this I cannot express my appreciation for this forum and the members. I read the forum daily and find the info extremely valuable. Having a place to post questions or just read others questions and responses is great!

Do a search for Wong or Steve Wong. There is more info here than you could read in a week.

FWIW, I have a SW chip, which is set up for a Fabspeed premuffler, drilled airbox, and a Flowmaster muffler. I'm very happy with the setup, but I have no hard performance numbers for you.

Forget changing the air filter. No performance increase to be found on intakes on the 3.2, only modifications to the exhaust, and adding the appropriate chip for your changes. I'm also a fan of the SW Chips.

SW chip - YES

Exhaust - YES

Intake - No increase unless you like the sound increase, (which BTW is cool)

Another vote for the SteveW chip and exhaust upgrade. No performance gains on intake side. Do the search, hours of info and entertainment.:cool:

Same here, S.W. Chip along with a Fabspeed pre-muff and M&K 1 in 1 out muffler. Overall driveability greatly improved especially at the RPM ranges tha you drive most of the time. did add a K&N filter element (no mods to the air box) noticed nothing.

A Nissan 200sx? I had one of those once - it was great car, especially considering it was only a 1.8. I never liked the turbo lag though.

Curious comments on the intake issue because, if you read the dyno results section on his web site, Steve W. seems to believe that intake changes do improve performance. I am getting ready to install a Fabspeed exhaust/pre-muffler, Steve W. chip and Fabspeed airbox lid w/ K & N filter. Report to follow.

Intake changes such as ExtrudeHoning the intake manifold provides a moderate contribution to the top end power of the motor. K&N air filters do not. If your motor is modified an any significant way, there is a very modest gain at the extreme top end of the rev range by boring your airbox cover, or just cutting off the face of the lid. The trade off is that at lower speeds in hot weather, hotter air will be injested that will lower your power until cooler air is brought back in with the car in motion. The best solution is some kind of free flow setup that draws cool air from right under the decklid intake.

hmmmm.....does having a Turbo wing have any effect on getting cool air into the engine compartment? I don't recall ever seeing a "cold air" system for older 911's like i see for many other cars

How difficult is the installation of the Fabspeed exhaust and Cat bypass? It states that it is a simple "bolt on" process, is this really the case. Can a newbie complete the installation of both in his home garage?

Yes it's simple bolt on process.............................:D
After you get the old rusty bolts out !!!!!

Acutally both the cat and muffler can be removed on one peice, buy removing 6 rusty bolts (see above) and 2 straps.

Before you buy a muffler check out M&K Mufflers Great product half the price of Fabspeed

to clarify the chip does a world of a difference. not sure how much with stock exhaust but once you have opened the exhaust to aftermarket ;a chip is a must
