I had a thought; what if I used the later WUR from the 3.3 and just plumbed it as such? Instead of trying to adapt the later WUR to the 3.0 and match the original connections. If this would work, does anyone have knowledge or photos of the vacuum line routing and connections of a '78-'79 turbo??

If you take the workshop manual vacuum diagram for a 78-79 car, and eliminate the dual advance/retard unit on the distributor and the intercooler, you will have most of what you need for the 77. I will try to get a photo and explanation of how I adapted a 3.3 WUR up in the next couple of days.

Great, my application already uses the single distributor vacuum line but I am using an intercooler.

It took a while, but here's the photo. You can see that my WUR has two lines, a vaccum line on top (for venting, I think) and a boost line on the bottom (causes the control pressure to drop under boost). This is a WUR from a later car (part no. 0 438 140 054, my 3.0 should use an 0 438 140 022), which I have adjusted to give a warm control pressure of 2.8 bar, instead of the 3.3 spec of 3.7 bar. The manual does not mention the boost adjustment for the 3.0 WUR, but it looks to me like the car has had it from new, even though the WUR has been changed.

Tom,
What is that braided line going into your engine cover?

I think you are referring to his plug wires.

Thanks for the photo, your engine looks very clean for nearly thirty years old. It's still difficult to see exactly where the lines terminate. I believe they're going to the same places mine are. I tried the later 054 WUR with no success. I eventually put the 022 back on, then built a combination of the two of them, functioning as an 022 but utilizing most of the new parts from the 054. The 054 has the additional chamber and spring for boost enrichment that I was never able to gain any success with. As you mentioned, the control pressures of the 054 were much higher than the 022.

The braided line (fabric wrapped) to my fan shroud is the air supply for the charcoal cannister for the evaporative emission control.

Good point about the vacuum/boost line connections being unclear. What I can tell you is that the connections are to the throttle body, and they match the connections for a 78 or 79 3.3 Turbo. My guess is that Porsche phased in the boost enrichment control to the WUR at some point during MY 1977 production.

Thanks for the compliments on the engine appearance. The car has only 72,000 miles from new. Of those, 15,000 were in the first six months of the car's life. The original owner, with whom I have spoken and corresponded, told me that he and his wife took the car for a long tour of North America right after they bought it. I gather that it made a fast trip down a long stretch of the Trans-Canada. Remember, the USA had 55 mph limits then!

I would like to find an 022 WUR if anyone has a spare.
