205/50, 205/55, 205/60 series tires/brands?
I have read almost every single post on Pelican regarding tires and tire sizes and I still can't get a majority answer on what the correct size would be for original 15x6 fuchs on my 71 Targa S. So I am hoping that the experts out there will help make my darn mind up so I can get the Targa back on the road safely. So what will it be???
Details: -1971 Targa S -All stock (except for the damn 1971 T motor replacement) -Driving will be spirited with some track days Keep in mind I am in Colorado so will incur days of rain and hopefully NO snow. Thanks for the help! ![]() Thought I would add some more information: The Targa has the stock original 6" Fuchs. Will be spending time doing the DE thing and also some spirited mountain touring (which means rain) so I need from the experts the proper sizing and also tire brand recommendations. Two posts labeled "Tires for '72" and "Tires Tires Tires... '73E" helped but still could not provide an answer on what size works best for a mostly stock look (i.e. 195/?? in front and 205/?? in rear, etc.). I have been told so many different combinations that my head is spinning so if I get a majority answer from the experts I will stop spinning and start purchasing... Thanks everyone for helping a newbie!!! Last edited by samjepperson; 07-28-2006 at 11:33 AM.. |

As far as 'Porsche 911 Buyers Guide' goes, the 71S would stock be rolling on 6 and 7x15 Fuchs rims. The tires stock would have been 185/70VR15.
Not sure how much that helps since you have 16 rims. Anyway, welcome to the forum ! Better informed than I will join in to help you out in a moment.

that's b/c no one knows for sure if those sizes will fit your car -- you are right at the margin of safety
larger will NOT fit smaller WILL fit your sizes - maybe

a '71 S has +36mm ET 6x15 Fuchs at each corner. The +23.3ET rear 7 wasn't used until the '73 RS came out.
original tire was 185/70x15, Michelin XVR AND Pirelli CN36 were popular at the time. the 185/70x15 tire was ~25.7" tall and ~7.7" in cross section It is difficult to come by this size today. 195/60 x15 @ ~24.2 x 7.9" is a little shorter and wider 205/60 x15 @ ~24.7 x 8.2" is a little taller and fatter. You will need to make a decision as what sort of appearance you want. Either of the above will work.

Here are some pics of my Yokohama 205/60/15 AVS ES100 tires mounted on deep 6x15 Fuchs. Gives you an idea of the look. Tires are great, excellent traction & cornering. Last shot give you a better profile...rears are 7R replica's, but it will give the idea. pics would not load.
