Over Heating??
I have a problem with the car not wanting to start after a long drive...I can let is sit for half hour to hour and it starts right up. Is there something that is overheating (starter maybe?) that is preventing it from starting?
1978 911 SC Targa 3.0 can hear the fuel pump, no starter bump and have electrical power - this is intermittent as well.

First thing I would do is to check the starter ground connection.

It's kinda dark right now but the ground seems to be good - I'll give it another thorough check tomorrow - any other ideas?

I'm not sure how you would check a ground strap visually ... so I am really mystified when I see all the responses like:
Quote:
The only way to check the body-to-transaxle ground strap functionally is to be under the car with probes against a bare, clean spot on the pan and stuck into [pushed rather firmly against] bare aluminum on the transaxle nosecone near where the strap is bolted ... while an assistant is cranking the engine over. If you measure more than a 0.2 Volt drop, then you have a strap corrosion/looseness problem! Likewise, the connections at the battery terminals [BOTH of them] and battery ground strap should be tested the same way! ps, The starter solenoid plunger and linkage does tend to bind when hot and corrosion/rust is present. It really should be well-lubricated with a high-quality moly grease such as Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease with moly #985 or #986!
