Do a search, there have been several threads about this and there are several difering opinions on the best way to do them. Don't use a hammer!

Dont use a hammer? no wonder nothing ever fits!
Actually, I used a bench vise as a press with a few diff sockets the last few times I had to do the coupler bushings. A hammer might shatter the whole works! Good luck

If you are challenged, you can buy the whole coupler, assembled, as well.

im sure no one will guess nor approve of the way i finally got the coupler apart.
![]() i got to the point where i didn't care anymore and if i did break it i could just buy a new one. i didn't have a vise. don't use a hammer? howabout an air hammer??? ![]() ![]() shifting is better, but still a little loose...must be the forks all worn out inside the transmission... david |

The slop may not be the forks in the tranny. The factory coupler bushings have some slop built into them to take up some of the vibrations. The 914 coupler bushings or even brass are supposed to be a better option.
Did you replace the other bushings associated with the shifter?

I used a hammer and a punch to get the pin in and out. I just placed the coupler on a socket that was smaller than the coupler itself so the impact was distributed to the bushing instead of the aluminum of the coupler. In and out very easily.

Wayne,
I did replace all the shfit bushings...the two up front by the shifter, and then the two in the shift coupler. When the tranny is in first gear, I can move the shifter side to side maybe like 3/4 of inch and i can see the whole shift rod, coupler and all move...there's definitely something inside the transmission moving.... |

I am not with my car right now but I think there IS some play in the shift rod INSIDE the trans.
You know these will never be as nice as a modern setup, right? i ahve some slop inthe shift block myself. I am working on a solution to this problem right now with a spacer/pin setup. I am not trying to out-emgineer the Porsche guys but modify to meet my needs.
