Mobile Works West - Tom Amon

What can I say, did I ever think I would have a mechanic come to my house to work on my Carrera? Never considered it until a few weeks ago while digging through this forum looking for someone to baseline my newly purchased 1987 911 Targa. After reading post after post about the great work that Tom Amon does, I figured I give him a shot. Well, here I am adding another POSITIVE post about this guy and his work. I could go on and on... He's friendly, keeps the work area CLEAN, does not mind if you hang back and watch him work his magic on your Porsche, and answered all my questions (silly as some may have been). Did I mention he was friendly! If you have an 89 or earlier 911 and you're looking for someone you TRUST to work on it, then Tom Amon is the guy.

My Carrera is purring at idle and growling when you get on it! It’s running so smooth right now I can't believe it. I have been driving her for 3 weeks and she is alive now. I couldn't be happier with the work and the price. When he was ready to split, he asked me to take her for a drive while he waited in his truck in front of my house. He wanted to make sure there was a smile on my face before he left, and guess what, I was grinning like the Cheshire cat.

Next up, CV boots and drop it a bit. 26” from the ground to lip of fender all the way around. Need to bring her down a bit. I will be calling Mobile Works West to take care of this…

I must be losing my mind! Wasn't there a thread here yesterday saying that Mobile Werks was coming to L.A. next week, 8-14-19-06 doing some top end work for someone and asking if anyone needed some work? Well, I do!

I've looked back 12 pages and can't find the thread! Any chance that Tom is coming down? Does he ever do that? I don't even know if Tom is here on the baord, anyone know?

There are two Mobile Works guys servicing the bay area.
Tom Amon and Jimmy Deering.
Both are excellent mechanics, with reasonable rates. I would never take an older Porsche to a dealer with those two on the prowl.
Gawd forbid an honest, competent mechanic in the So Cal area take a page out of Tom and Jimmy's book. They'd be busy as a one legged man in an a$$ kicking contest.

I wish we had "mobile Porsche mechanics" around here. When my car is screwed up (which is now), it's not driveable and my mechanic (Tab Tanner at Autobahn Garage in Findlay, OH) is 75 miles away. I'm having CIS issues, so I can't keep the car running long enough to get it to a mechanic. In situations like this, it would be great to have a mobile mechanic. Flatbedding the car is a very expensive option, I may have to buy a trailer if I plan to keep Helga. This has been the summer from hell for me...

Hello Jimmy (right?)

Yeah, I looked and looked and couldn't find that thread either. You don't suppose a moderator deleted it do you?

If you're going to be down here I'd like to have you come by. I'll call your number listed above and we can discuss.

For a real kick, let Tom take you for a ride on your car when he's done. HOLY CRAP! That guy can drive! Next time he's working on your car, ask him about his history in racing.

Art? Your car is down and out again? What is up with that car? I would be more than a little bummed.

Right after I drove the car home, my clutch cable snapped. I replaced it the next day, but now the car runs really poorly (hard to idle, keeps stalling, backfires, stumbles on acceleration). Tab recommended that I go through the entire ignition system and replace each component with a spare until I track down the problem. The car has a steady "stumble" and acts like it doesn't have full power and backfires through the exhaust. So far, I've replaced the Bosch CD unit, ignition coil, battery (my Optima wouldn't hold a charge), and Pertronix ignition unit. I'm getting closer, tomorrow I'll double-check the timing and air/fuel mixture. I'm ready to throw in the towel and consider this entire season a loss as far as the Porsche goes. This has become a major disappointment for me and I'm at the point where I'm wondering if owning a 32-year old 911 is what I want. I want to drive the car on a regular basis and do maintenance, not spend all of my free time wrenching with no positive results. I'm going to contact Tab Tanner as soon as he gets back from his honeymoon and let him know I'm back to "square one" unless I figure out the problem this weekend. This had been an incredibly expensive, frustrating summer...

It was running fine a couple of days ago and now it sound as though it is running like crap. What happen during those days? Did you remove or replace anything? Sound like you have a vacuum leak.

Nothing wrong with owning an older PORSCHE. I had a 74 PORSCHE as my first PORSCHE, and now I have a 82SC TARGA. The later cars are much better than the earlier cars.

Since buying my 82 Targa the only major work I did on it was to recover the Targa Top. The fuel pump been making a little noise and I was planning on replacing the fuel pump this weekend, but the new sealing rings that I order still haven't shown up.
