clunking in reverse

I have noticed a clunking when backing out up lately. Sounds like a CV joint only it only clunks one time. Both sides have completely new axles about 1000 miles ago. Bolts are still tight. Shocks are brand new Bilsteins (same time as axles) Swar bar mounts are tight and brackets are not cracked. 2 things I did lately, 1) lowered the rear to Euro specs, 2) had the engine R&R for a top end re-build. I've checked all bolts on suspension and seem to be tight. Bushings also look in good shape..

Any ideas??

Thanks

A cv joint will clunk going forward also, try listening closely while going thru turns for noises or vibrations that will tell what side and if its a cv joint.Maybe the clunk could be a loose motor or trans mount? You can also check the cv joints with the car jacked up and grabbing each axle and check for play

thanks for the suggestion, results are:
Clunking is coming from driver's side, only in reverse, and only within the first 10-20 feet of backing up. Does not clunk in fwd, nor around turns. no appreciable play in axles. Will be checking motor mounts today. One more question.. Could it be a worn torsion bar spring plate rubber bushing?

My '85 does this too. I had the axles repacked with grease some time ago. However, the clunk happened before and after the packing.

Any more info on suggestions/solutions, please email me.

thank you

I've noticed by single clunk happens only when I use the E-brake.

For instance, if I park it in the garage without using the ebrake, no clunk when I back out of the garage. When I DO use the ebrake and back out of the garage I get the clunk.

I have noticed that both of the ebrake lines smack the trailing arm when they are engaged. The hard line hits the hole within the trailing arm and this appears to stop the wheels from rolling, wehether going forward or reverse. Although i do not know, nor have I looked to see, if this is supposed to happen or not.

I have had similar problem on in the past - it turned out to be a sticking handbrake mechanism which is why there is only a single clunk (as the mechanism frees itself).
Problem was resolved by stripping the handbrake shoes/springs/adjusters, cleaning everything & reassembling with small amount of copper grease on moving parts.
You say you re-checked all suspension bolts -
did you also check nuts at top of rear shocks? Sound too obvious but worth looking at.

I am curious as to whether this was resolved as sticking handbrake, and was it fixed by simple cleaning and adjustment?
