80 3.0 , Top-in rebuild, Change Head studs?

I am just about finished with the Top End on my 80 911 SC, but someone said I Must replace all 24 head studs or they would for sure snap in no time. I have about 90K on the motor and am not looking forward to replacing these. Do I have to? Or is this guy just trying to get me to spend more cash?

I heard removing the studs is a bear..., not to mention the 24 bucks each replacement cost.

Thanks for any insight...

Just curious, but why did you have to re-do the top end on an SC engine with only 90,000 miles on it?

If you check the April 2000 issue of 'Excellence', you will find that Bruce Anderson is recommending the use of steel studs at all 24 locations now! Whoever quoted you $24.00 per stud is definitely not EVEN giving you a break on the price, and in light of Bruce's latest advice, must be trying to unload inventory before the demand goes to zero!

Hi,I recently rebuilt my 78SC engine (100 K)because 3 head studs had snapped,I did find valve guide wear as well.I did alot of research into replacment studs,Race-Tech to expensive and over engineered for my "normal" use,Delivar prefered option.Vertex have a online offer $12 each.I spoke to some race engine builders (UK), and the opinion was only replace the bottom 12, unless going for the ultimate then 24 Race-Tech.They had snapped at the joint between head/cylinder due to corosion(the car had been stood for long periods without use).I wasn't looking forward to the removal after i heard how hard a job it was and could only be done with a special "snap on" tool.I managed with a normal stud remover and some patience. The advice i received was to gently warm the case ,heater placed underneath, then localy heat the stud. When removing the stud unwind !/2 a turn ,then back up 1/4 turn etc.All of my 12 studs came out easy.If i had the engine out already it wouldn't cost much more to do the full job, for peace of mind. Hope this is of some use to you. GUY.
