Audio upgrade help/suggestions
The previous owner of my 74 coupe had installed an Optimus (Radio Shack I think) CD player and some cheap speakers that he had made boxes for and just had them sitting on top of the back seats. He installed alpine speakers in the door beside the stock speakers, but had disconnected both?? The system is ok, but the volume needed to hear, especially at speed, really causes a lot of distortion. I would like to upgrade to a better sound system but haven't done this since I was a teenager back in the 70's. Now everything seems complicated with crossovers, amps, head units, controllers etc. I would like to do the work myself and would appreciate some good suggestions. I'm looking to spend around $500.00 for the total..nothing extravagant, just better than what I have (mostly I like to listen to the engine).
Thanks ------------------ Shakenbake |

Chris, It sounds to me like you should be able to find a DIN-sized unit with high-power output in a Crutchfield catalog, and be able to install that one unit without much trouble yourself. I had thoughts along the same lines, myself, later this year after I get finished with my carpet and paint/bodywork. From a cursory look through the Crutchfield catalog, there are several Blaupunkt and Sony models that 'look' compatible with my dash. Let us know what you pick and how the installation turns out, OK?

Thanke Warren, I'm going to check out Crutchfield's catalog and I'll pass along any tips. I had visited an Audio shop yesterday and he had my head spinning about how much money I was going to have to spend ($1700.00)....I think I can get a decent upgrade for $500.00.

Shakenbake, Hello. I reposted this issue that was brought up a couple of weeks ago under Radio Changes. I was ready for change and ended up doing my own car after getting sky high estimates from audio shop around here. If I did'nt go with an amp, my system would be around $600. 911's are very easy to work on do to there straight ahead approach to car building, (If anyone has taken apart the whole dash of a Japanese car, they will know what I am talking about). The other post was right, just use a din sized reciever, Blaupunkt if possible. Since you won't be using an amp, just make sure it is as powerfull as possible to overcome the 911's engine,(I know that sounds odd). Any speaker, no matter what price will be an improvement. Did this person cut new speaker openings in your door? I hope not. Any questions email me, I'd be happy to help out another Porsche member.
