Tire Experts - Opinion Please

Sorry to start a new thread on this, but after much reading, I'm still nervous.

I am thinking about going from 16" to 17" wheels because the tire selection has really gone done in the last year. I currently have Pilot Sports in 205/55R16 and 225/50R16 - NLA.

Mostly street driving, some autocrosss. Lowered about 0.5 below Euro, -1 (F), -2 (R) camber. My goal is not max. rubber in the wheel wells. What I want is good selection of tires and no chance of rubbing. I have found some wheels for a reasonable price. Does this look OK:

17x7.5 +23mm 205/50R17
17x9 +15mm 245/40R17

All suggestions welcome. Thanks for any help.

The offsets look a little on the short side. My 17" wheels have 30.4 and 17.7 mm offset front and rear respectively. They are 8" and 9" wide.

There is a thread on Rennlist.org which may be of interest.

You can't make a racehorse out of a bull, but you can make an awfully fast bull.

I have 17 inch Borbets as my street rims in I believe the same offset as you are listing. Mine are 7.5 + 9 inch wide and I have 225/45 + 255/40 Fuzion tires with a lowered car and they fit fine but the front lips did have to be rolled for clearance.

If you would consider staying with 16 rims and Michelin, I would recommend Pilot Exalto. Thats what I got in that dimension after my almost ten years old Pilot Sport. I am very pleased with them. Of course, I have not been to the track with them yet.

That will fit fine, the left front lip will be close, some cars have more of an issue than others.

The 17s you have chosen are actually shorter than what you now have on your car. the front ny ~.5" the rears by ~.1",

the car will have a slightly more of nose down attitude, but not a problem at all.

There is something not being mentioned about the car on Rennlist, I don't know what it is but there is more to the story than has been stated so far.

When the wheel width is increased the ET or o/s must also increase to keep the wheel in the same position in the wheel well.

+23.3mm is what the front wants for 7 or 7.5 w/ the 7.5 w/ that o/s has its outer edge pushed ~.25" further outboard.

+15mm is what a 9" rear on an SC/Carrera flared car will want. Some even use up to ~15mm of spacers to futrther move the outer edge ouboard(not recomended but it has been done)

Hi folks

Don't know if I can add anything of value to this discussion but I had these "calculator" links saved that might be of some help. The "wheel size" calculator has been referenced before I'm sure, the "off-set" calulator I have not seen before.

Wheel Offset Calculator

Tire Size Calculator

Now I'm off to the garage and 98 degree heat to switch wheels, getting a new set of RA1 track tires Monday. Woohoo!

Good luck,
Andrew

I guess I am a little confused here. What tire are you looking for? I just ran a "select by size" scan on Tire Rack and exluding winter and track tires there are 71 to pick from in the 225/50 size. Compared to what I can get in the 245/45 size (8), it looks to me that you hit the mother load. Is there a particular tire you want or need?

I was trying to replace the Pilot Sports I have now. I'm leaning now toward Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.

I've also never been very happy with the wheels that the PO put on the car: Design 90's. Looked like a good opportunity to get better looking wheels, 17", and a better selection of high-performance tires.

The downside is the front tires are almost new and I was planning on spending the money on a TBitz EFI system.

I'll probably go with the Goodyears for now and consider again the next time.

Makes perfect sense now. I "assumed" you were running Fuch's. Picking an 17" aftermarket wheel that will look right on a SC will be a fun project. Be sure to keep us posted on what you do. I know I will be faced with that decison sooner than I want.

I'll reopen this thread when the front tires are worn!
