Goofed on a trade.....

Early this summer, a friend with a 78 SC had problems with his ignition... His key was stuck and was unable to turn it. He had MobileWorksEast check it out and was told that he needed a new ignition cylinder. Well, I just so happen to have an extra one at the time. It came with my car when i bought it.

After mulling it over, we worked out a trade deal. My ignition cylinder for his Front Valance. they were approximately the same cost.

6 mos later........

I am now having starting issue. At first I thought it was my solenoid on the starter but after analyzing my problem, I have come to the conclusion that NOW, I may need a new ignition cylinder. this realization came to me this yesterday when my car would not start. In frustration, I turn the key to start and wiggled it at the same time. Then the car started. So I figured that the contacts inside the cylinder are worn.

Does anyone want to trade a front valance for a good ignition cylinder?

Can't help you with the parts, but it *is* fixable. The same thing happened to me last year (the day before an autocross!). I wired up a push-button start to it. It's not great, but it works. The local shop said it's fixable but labour intensive. I haven't had it fixed yet because the push-button works fine, but I do want to get it done.

Troubleshooting no start

OH, and don't feel bad about the trade. Last winter I traded a friend 2 excellent condition 69 front turn signal assemblies and new H4's for his steel S front bumper that turned out to be in "poor to average" condition.

Lesson learned: dont' trade parts at 10PM at night at a roadside gas station when it's 20 below windchill out and then stuff those parts in storage for 5 months without looking them over.

Shaun,

Thanks you, I'll get back to you on this within a week or two.

It happened again this morning and wiggling the key didn't work. This time, I hooked up the battery charger and had it on start mode. The car started right up.

Come to think of it, I did the same thing yesterday.

I'll be checking the battery to see if I need a replacement. Hopefully, this is not a sign that my alternator is going out. It seems to have enough battery juice, because when I turn the key to the on position all warning lights, radio, turn on. It seem during the night the battery drains a enough to where I'm not getting enough current to my starter.

Two years ago I was unabale to turn the key twice in one week. I sprayed WD40 in it...................ruined a pair of pants a week later when it decided to leak some more WD40 out.

I gave it a second application using lock type graphite, and ended up getting that all over a second pair of pants later that week.

So far no more problems.................probably just a matter of time though.

Only wear shorts for two weeks after spraying anything in there. And remember it gets all over the key every time for a month.
