quick themoswitch que. CIS cold start.

i recently dropped and re-installed my motor. i was surpised to see many thermoswitches stuck in various threaded holes. the two i did mess with are; the one that is installed in the crankcase breather cover (took it off to facilitate gasket change), and the one in the cam chain case cover, facing into the engine compartment, left side. the wire broke and i had to splice it.

my car now is hard to start ice cold. it fires right up, chugs at extremely low RPM's, sometime dies, sometime slowly builds up the RPM's over a 20 second period and settles into idle bliss. makes me think the cold start valve is not working. which thermoswitch is associated with the CSV? i hope and pray it is the easily accessed on up front! BTW, what type of electrical connector is that used on that front thermoswitch? not quite a female spade connector. i kept it and will take it apart clean it up and try to solder it back cleanly. would be nice to buy a new one.

Cliff, the one on the left chain cover is the guy that controls the cold start injector..which sounds like it is working in your case. It provides a ground for the the cold start valve circuit based on ambient temperature and only while the starter is spinning.
As for the other thermoswitch on the breather cover..isn't that for the lambda box? If it is I think it helps tell the control box the engine is cold and needs an enrichened mixture? Of course, murphy's law..the hard one to get to!

Are you absolutely sure you have the correct plugs connected to the right things? IIRC the wire plug for hte cold start valve is interchangeable with the air sensor position switch and the frequency valve. Mixing them up might provide the symptoms you describe, but so might about 20 other things.

One other thing to check, the AAR.
It is supposed to supply additional air past the throttle until the engine warms up a bit (like a choke). If it isn't functioning the engine could do what you describe. It's on the passenger side of the engine under the #5 and 6 intake runners, if you use three mirrors and 4 flashlights you might be able to see part of it

duh, doiy doiy doiy. ok learnt something new. the thermoswitch has two different sized spades! it is specific which side gets which wire. when i spliced in some connector i pulled out of my box, i inadvertently picked up one that was big enough to fit either side. needlesstosay, i hooked it up backwards. do i got out a smaller one and hooked up with the correct polarity and all is well in my SC world. thanks.
