M&K Exhaust Video
Just put together a little video featuring Ben's handiwork. The car is a stock 1987 Carrera 3.2 with K&N intake (which you'll hear in the video), SSI's, Steve Wong and the M&K 2-in/2-out. Other than that, the car is fully stock. I finally got tired of making video's with crap audio, so I mounted a microphone (a Shure SM57 for you musicians) back in the engine compartment and ran the cable to a small battery-powered mixer with a low frequency cutoff switch and a level control. After some testing on the street, I found a decent level on the mixer and headed for the track. What you're seeing is a DE with a mix of cars and talent. This was the final session of the day and was an "all skate" format -- novices, intermediates and advanced all on track at the same time. Lot's of traffic, but you get the idea.
Here ya go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUuJE9rcEOo P.S. I was scrubbing in a brand new set of Toyo T1R's, so no comments on my driving!!!

Sounds great. What revs were you shifting at ? Seemed low to my ear.

lateapex911,
Good ears!! Yes indeed I was short shifting at just under 6K. The engine has 110K miles on it and runs just fine, but I don't want to run the risk of stretching a rod bolt so I decided to forego a few RPM's in favor of longevity. Probably being too cautious, but I don't want to tear the engine down just yet....

Excellent!
I was thinking 5500 or 6K max in some areas. It didn't sound as "ripping' as I want my M&K to sound. Now I know why, so I can buy mine without fear..it'll rip! Thanks!

Good vid. I have a single in/out in my projects list right now but have been undecided about how loud the car will be. I've been unable to find a car locally to do a sound check. Your vid sealed the deal for me. I may do a dual out now. I love the dual out look but didn't want any annoying resonance.

Don,
I haven't heard one of Ben's single-out's, but I love the sound of the dual. I do about 75% track and 25% street, with the occasional day trip, and I'm totally happy with the volume level. Loud, but full of character. There is a very slight drone at 2100 RPM, but you don't stay at that speed for long and the drone is not a deal-breaker by any means. That said, if my car were a daily driver, I would seriously consider the single out (especially since the extra outlet gets you nothing in terms of performance). For my uses, the dual was the only choice. Interestingly enough, over the past 3 months (I've had the muffler for about a year now) it seems to have "broken-in". The only way I can describe it is that the sound has mellowed. Any harshness that was there is gone and it is much richer sounding. If you've ever purchased an acoustic guitar new and broken it in yourself then you'll know what I mean.

Thanks. I think I'll stick with the single out for now since my percentages are about the same but opposite.

Your car sounds great. Since we have similar cars (89 Carrera, SSI's, SteveW chip), it would be nice to compare. The Camcorder is in the car, so it looses some of its low end sound. Still, its pretty clear since you can hear me coughing. My car is slightly different in that it is a 3.4, twin plugged, 20/21 cams, and other stuff. The gears have been changed also and I have no problems taking it to 7 grand each shift. The exhaust is a Magnaflow dual in and dual out.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4700035160174297055 You might have to turn up the volume slightly. |

The car sounds GREAT! I was considering purchasing a Fabspeed muffler however may have to consider a M & K after watching the video. Any thoughts on a Fabspeed vs M & K other than the obvious cost factor?

I've heard the fabspeed. It's a nice sounding muffler. It was very quiet at idle and sounded good on high rpm. Though from my research, the fabspeed is a heavy muffler. M&K hands down for price and weight. From the sound clips and vids, sounds great too.

M&K sounds good alright. That K&N intake is something else! Sounds like a mild turbo blowoff valve.
I've got a M&K one-off mutant sport muffler. I think it's louder in the car than out. Please forgive my Sally-esque driving.......http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4607380413788928270 And man, Mike's car really scoots! There's something to be said for 3.4 L and some regearing- and of course a good driver. Yikes!!! You know you're choking the life out of that thing with those SSI's, don't you????
