Low voltage at headlights

Hi everyone,

The problem is the low beams look like parker lights, and the high beams look like low beams.

The voltage at the fuse, and at the headlight is only 3 volts when on low beam. I didn't have a helper so couldn't check the voltage when hi beams are on.

battery is fully charged

Is this a relay problem?

Thanks for you help,
Adam

Porsches.... unfortunately....don't have relays in this circuit as delivered from the factory. You are well advised to add them. There are plenty of posts on this subject...think "Marcus Sucro"...

I would first check overall system voltage...as measured between the battery terminals. Should be 12.6 volts for a fully-charged battery. Anything close to 12.0 Volts or less is essentially a dead battery. Do this first before you start checking branch circuits.

yes..i already checked that. And it was 12.7v

And by the way, it is a ROW car with H4 headlights standard. Does it still not have a relay?

You're likely getting a lot of contact resistance along the "way"...and the "path" may lead to badly pitted steering column switch, which carries ALL the electrical load. A relay would reduce this hundreds-fold as it would only be a "triggering" circuit instead....

You can also use the Porsche standard round relays for headlights for a more stock look. (Rather than adding the non - standard sucro relays.) Wiring up the relays into the headlight harnesses at the fuse panel is how I did mine.

Porsche Crest

Adam,

Sounds like a burnt stalk switch problem. Does the control stalk not switch the headlamps to the high beams when moved forward? It sounds like the 'Flash' position still works.

It's not just PORSCHE, I think it a German Engineer thing. My Audi didn't have a fuse for the radiator fan, so when the fan froze up it took the entire front harness with it.

Yes.. When i push the stalk forward to what would normally turn the high beams on permanantly, it doesn't work. But pulling back to flash works. Albeit not very bright

Dirty contact or pitted contact on the stalk switch, replace the stalk switch and install relay for the headlights
