Exactly - and I agree with the above. The worst I've seen tho was on Rennlist. I posted some search terms a poster could use to help. He responded that if he wanted to take the time to do a search he would have done one. Naturally, if some SOB is that lazy, then why should I waste my time to help him at all?
Everyone posting a question should realize that everyone is helping as a friendly, volunteer -- AND many of the people who tend to post answers here have very high billable hourly rates, aka chargeout rates, or if they are retired, then they used to and hiring them to consult would be spendy. Now who is going to answer that strut question I posted yesterday? |
Randy,
"Now who is going to answer that strut question I posted yesterday?" That depends on how much you are willing to pay . . . -Ed |
You know, I have been a Pelicanhead for a few years now and I used to use this board extensively as I was sorting out my 78SC and 84 928. The people on this board have been so helpful I couldn't begin to put a price on it. On the other hand, I have spent several thousands of dollars at Pelican Parts and I continue to buy expendables (brake pads, window switches, CV covers, etc.).
I wasn't going to say anything but it has been bothering me...so here goes. SHEEEEEZ!!!!!! Wil and Early S Man, sorry that I didn't find the post on Aluminum Alloy material. I did a search for Fuchs and found aobut 200 posts. I scanned about 30 of them by topic and thought....hey, I'll save some time and ask the question. Maybe it hasn't been asked. Then I forgot that I posted it until a couple of days later. You are right, Wil, I did skip your link because I was more interested in reading the replies. By the time I read all 9 or so replies, I forgot that you posted a link. But by that time my question had already been answered and I was having more fun looking at the pics and video. Then you and Early S Man raid this post and start b&tch&ng about how under appreciated your time is. Give us a break!!! Most of us here are very appreciative of the help we get. That's why we keep coming back and buy stuff from Pelican Parts. Well, that's about all I have to say on that. Again, I tried not to vent, but it's been bothering me. Have a good day. |
RazorRacer:
Simply tellin' ya like it is..... too bad you took it *so* personally that you think it was directed only at you. It wasn't...there is a strong tendency for this kind of response....and if you were in my shoes tyring to help people and having your answers ignored because it takes some *work*... ( you know ...a mouseclick !) ....well maybe you'd think otherwise.... It's truly a "sign of the times"....instant gratification. You say... " You are right, Wil, I did skip your link because I was more interested in reading the replies......I was having more fun looking at the pics and video." Kinda makes my point, doesn't it? As I said...all I did was do my own search on "Fuchs" and "Alloy".... and the link with ALL the answers came up. What's so hard with that? You say 200 posts?...couldn't find an answer? You mean "alloy" or "material" wasn't one of your search words when you ask what they are MADE OF ??? C'mon ! All you had to do was "click" on the link. All you did with your response is confirm that people want answers handed to them on a silver platter, and that doclinks given are ignored becuase it's not "right there". It' not just you.... Cheers, - Wil |
OK, here we go...
I know that I made your point, but my point is that I do want it easy and that's why I come back here. If I wanted it hard, I would go to the library. My point is that you have no right to vent on my post. I just wanted to know what Fuchs are made of ... and no I didn't include alloy or material in my search. Sorry. But if it bothers you that others take advantage of your "free" advice, then get another life? I don't come here for you personally, I just come here for the free advice...and the cool people. |
"I did a search for Fuchs and found aobut 200 posts. I scanned about 30 of them by topic..."
- IF this had been posted up front then I bet the frustration from Warren & Wil (and me) would have come out on a different thread. I do this for just that reason & I also usually give the search terms I use. Yes, the search engine could be improved (esp. when you consider the weekly dues we all pay!!). But a proper choice of search terms will save you a lot of time and hassle. Not following Wil's link is inexcusable. And we do have the right to vent on your post. Now, if anybody wants to get really frustrated over this sort of thing, try taking on a bunch of lazy graduate students. The best rejoinder was one my own PhD advisor made about one of my colleagues decades ago - it was along the lines of "she [a PhD candidate] wants me to do X, Y & Z -- apparently she has not realized that I already HAVE a PhD." He eventually dumped her into a terminal MS. So - if anyone wants to eliminate the extremely helpful and detailed advice from some real experts who freely spend their own high-dollar time on this bbs, just go ahead and flame them when they ask you [that's the general 'you' not a specific person] to do a little work to help your self. If you want to help out, then post answers (the ones you know about, not just wild specualtion) for the more common questions, so the experts can stick to the harder questions. That's what I try to do. People can also work their way thru a job on a long thread with questions and answers from others. Probably the premier example of that is Randy Cale's (recale) CV repair thread. Tho he has related skills that most of us don't have (IIRC, he was a Harrier mechanic in the Corps). A similar thread is the famed front end suspension thread that somebody did. |
