What Is This?

I removed the steering wheel from my 1984 Cabriolet today and found this little disintegrated piece(s).

What the heck is it and do I need to replace it?

Looks like a piece of the old bushing/bearing. Buy the metal insert, tap it into place...(it will usually force the rest of the broken bearing out of the way)...Hmmmm, did you take the wheel off because of "sloppy feel"? There's your culprit. Cheap, easy fix. You'll thank yourself for it.

Could you put something in the picture to reference the size of the object? ...like a coin or your hand.

I was thinking that might be the bottom of an envelope's cancellation stamp which made me think it was the bearing...(and the color)

Sorry, I trimmed the picture too much, it is sitting on a regular envelope, so I think the picture above is the same thing.

The steering is fine. I took the wheel off to do the standard 911 odometer gear replacement.

If it IS part of the bushing, it will start getting sloppy pretty soon. Keep that socket handy. You can still drive it until you get the metal sleeve.

Yup! Definitely the steering wheel bushing. Our host has them for @ $10.00.

I'll order one. Pelican can have a race with odometergears.com. We'll see who gets here first.
