I don't know but I have the same exact problem. I haven't really made an attempt to fix it or hunt it down as I am just trying to get my car to the point where it'll pass smog but, I will definately watch this thread in hopes of a solution.

Wouldn't a 74 be exempt from smog rules? Isn't it 25 years?

In California, it was 25 years and older, then became 1973 and older and in 2003 is suppose to become 30 years and older. (until they change the rules again). A lot of people seem to be really surprised when I tell them I need to get my car smogged.

My first guess would be to check your headlight switches. Most lights are wired directly back to the switch instead of a junction. If I recall, the left and right lights (both low and high) have totally different circuits/fuses, etc. If someone put in a new switch and reversed the wires. Voila. it isn't hard to remove.. unscrew the knob, then the circular nut. you can then push the switch out the back and lower it under the dash to check the connections. If this isn't the problem,, remove the headlights and see if someone had put a new socket plug on. As they may have miswired that.

Smog is one of the reasons I intentially looked for '73 or older. I bought a NICE! '72 after looking for about a month. I don't mind making sure that the co2 is low, what I don't like is not being able to modify even though it meets smog except for the visual. What difference does it make what it looks like as long as the emissions are low? Oh Well enough venting
It sounds like there is a wire crossed somewhere. I am intending to install H4 headlights also and sure would like to know if there will be problems I should look out for. Be carefull removing the switch. The first thing I had to do after buying my car was replace the light switch. There is a washer behind the dash that needs to be there. If you lose it, good luck finding it again. I got this good advice from a salvage yard and was sure glad when I found that washer. If it is not there, you can't tighten the switch back down tight enough. ------------------ John Birkett 73'T Targa [This message has been edited by jbirkett (edited 03-31-2000).] |

I don't know anything about the headlight switches, but if it's easy to remove, as Scott Matre says, you can remove it, switch the wires, and be done, regardless of whether they are crossed again somewhere else. Just switch them at the switch and be done with it.
