Horn-y question

Clever title, eh?

Anyway, the trumpet horns from my '84 have been removed and I need a new set.

I don't want to buy the 65-89 911/912 horns (911-635-101-20-M100, 911-635-102-20-M100) because they take up too much room and cost $70 each.

So, what is the difference between these:

The 993 horns (993-635-206-00-OEM, 993-635-205-00-OEM) for $31 each

The 996 horns (996-635-205-04-M281, 996-635-206-04-M281) for $10 each

The 928 horns (928-635-221-00-M195, 928-635-222-00-M195) for $16 each

I assume they will all work equally well and plug into my car without any fuss.

Why so many different horns? Don't they all sound pretty much the same? And why the $10 to $70 price range?

What are my fellow Pelicans using?

Unless you are a purist and absolutly need Porsche horns, I would just go down to NAPA and get a pair of high & low puck type for ~$15/ea

I did what Bill said and went to local auto parts store and bought puck style for about $20.00 for the pair. Plenty loud and don't interfere with the air flow to my oil cooler.

I need to do this as well. Do the NAPA horns have the higer pitched European horn sound? I don't want my P-car to sound like my Audi, and almost every other car out there today. Every 911 horn I have heard has a higher european type horn sound.

LOL!!! That's great Charles!

Ditto, SpeedracerIndy. I love the Porsche horn sound.

It just occured to me. I know a guy with a 996. I'll honk his horn and see if I like the sound.

It just seems stupid for Porsche to have four different horns. Talk about inefficient. I bet Toyota and Honda have one that they use in every car they make.

I bought the red hella horns off of ebay for cheap (no more than $40, I think less). They are each 3/4 of the size of your fist and are LOUD as heck.

After my girlfriend called my horn "whimpy" the other day, I had to do something. So, I found some FIAMM air horns a Autozone. They were only $25 and easy to install. They are LOUD, and have the european sound I was looking for. I found them on JC Whitney too, but Autozone had them in stock for the same price: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2009002/p-2009002/N-111+10201+600002553/c-10101

If anyone's interested in the sound I can probably record the sound in an MP3 or WAV file.

another note ,,score offroad tech demands horns for ALL race vehicles no matter what class. guess whats used 99% and when a large crowd assembles due to gnarly section or spectators wanna play "touch the trophy truck" as it goes by at 140mph, the horns are used quite liberally! hahahahahaha usually the last thing a dum-a$$ hears before hes hit by good ole american steel. off road tip............take wifes nylons, g/friends mistress old panty hose and zipty to both hella horns. point downward so water doesnt waste trumpets. nylons keep crap out of horns!

if your really desperate ............to be different jc whitney sells the LA CUCURACHA horn! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

I used to drive a Cadillac that had a REALLY loud horn. Ever since then I've been a proponent of loud horns. When people on cell phones swerve into your lane you can see them jump when you hit the horn.

Get something loud.
