targa door glass

Anyone replace the driver side door glass on a targa? I have had to replace the guide rail and of course replaced the rubber seal as well. I began the reistall by using weather seal cement to glue the seal into the rail and inserted the rail in the do9or (on a targa it is IMPOSSIBLE to install the window and rail at the same time due to space restrictions). The glass would not go into the rubber because of the close tolerances. I removed all glue and was able to put the rail on the glass on my bench but it was tight and had to use soapy water and a lot more force than I felt comfortable with. So now the rail is installed in car, the window shoved in with more soapy water as far as possible and hoping the drying of the water will secure it, otherwise I am at a loss here. Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I already have the targa top adjustment manual downloaded from this site. It's great.

What I really need here, in simpler terms, is whether the factory recommends any type of adhesive when installing the side window glass in the guide rail (with the rubber seal). Or is the friction between glass/rubber/rail sufficient? Thanks again.

I had to replace the window lifter on the passenger side of my targa.
it was difficult to take out and even harder to put back together. Maybe I missed a step but I had to take out the quarter window to get it to fit.

As far as your question about fitting the glass back into the guide rail. I bought a used part and did not replace the rubber seal I just used the seal that the used lifter came with (it was $30 from a dismantler) I fitted the glass into the rail and tapped it in with a plastic head hammer VERY gently it seemed to be in their pretty good. And after several months no problems. Not a job I want to have to do again though.

Thank you Mike. I did not use acetone but used mineral spirits to clean off all the contact cement I used first! What a major pain this job was. As you recall, yesterday I cleaned everything up to new again, used soapy water and was able to push the glass most of the way down into the guide rail while attached inside the door. I was afraid it would simply pull right out again. This morning, after it had dried, I pulled up as hard as I could on the window and it is in there good. A quick adjustment and it works great. Hopefully this thread will save someone else a ton of work in the future. On Wayne's scale of difficulty, I give it a 4.

By the way, on targas, if you have to remove the window with the guide rail (as per the Bentley) you will have to remove the vent window. There is simply not enough room on the targas.
