Targa Roll Bar cover
On a previous post there was some discussion about removing the roll bar cover on targas.
I want to repaint mine since I just bought a new top and headliner. My question is, to remove the cover you just remove the nuts that are located under the rear fenders? Is that it? Does the piece of metal trim that runs around the bottom of the roll bar and rear window under the weather stripping have to be removed? And how do you remove it without first removing the weatherstripping? And on a related topic, my underside of the roll bar has seen better days, (I'm refering to the roll bar headliner.) It has a couple of knicks and a couple of rips from the rear top pins gouging it. I have never seen a replacement for this piece. I would think that any upholstery place could fabricate something except it has those vented sections around the seat belt mounts. Anyone ever messed with this? ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

Just to update everyone...
I pulled the roll bar off my car last night. Sometimes I think I ask questions that are pretty darn self explanitory. It was a sinch to take off the bar... just jacked up the car high enough to gain access to the 4 nuts under the wheel wells then removed the rubber weather stripping and removed the 10 or so screws that are behind it. A little tugging and grunting and voila. . . came right off. I then stripped the old paint off with acetone, primered it, and then on put two coats of matte black enamel. Looks great for $15!! I left the primer unsanded to give it a little texture. As I type my car is sitting waiting for its new Targa top that I am now ripping off (very carefully). ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

It sounds like you had pretty good luck with that cover, though I guess I am surprised the old paint came off with just Acetone if it really was polyurethane the way someone said it was in an earlier thread. If you happen to have problems with your paint job sticking to the stainless later on, you might want to try PPG's DP 40/401 Epoxy Chromate Primer ... it is a very 'tenatious' primer that will stick to many surfaces that tend to be 'difficult' ... like Aluminum, chrome, and stainless.

Well, keep it a secret but you are correct. The paint was a SOB to remove. I ended up using acetone with some sandpaper. I put the acetone in a squirt bottle, spayed an area and before/during it evaporated I sanded it lightly. It made a hell of a mess but expedited its removal. And yup, the cover came off much easier than I ever thought it would.
