My balls are tight!

I've read as many posts as I can regarding a cv joint disassemble/clean/reassemble. I keep reading about balls just dropping out of the cage. My balls were in tight. They would move back and forth in the opening in the cage but I had to (carefully) pry them out. My question: when I reassemble do I push these balls back in the cage so they dont fall out, or should they just be placed there essentially held in with grease.

Thanks

Tight is good. When they are new, you can barely move them. Take the balls out, clean them and set them on a white piece of paper. That will show if they have overheated

make sure your BALLS have no rust no dents no cuts no dings and are perfectly smooth. ie. in perfect shape. grease will hold them in if used liberally. use coffee can lids with duck tape to keep in place while moving them around. its kinda like a RUBIKS CUBE!

My balls are tight!

I wish I could say the same for MY Porsche balls.

They are somewhat deflated and limp.

Yes, the CV jont balls are normally tight in the cages.

Best,
Grady

These are FACTORY balls, as old and limp as they are. They probably have a Porsche part number.

Careful guys – this might get thrown OT when it is about CJ joints. Oops, I meant CVs.

The CV joint balls are actually ball bearings. I think all ball bearings in the world are American Standard. I think the 108 mm CV joint balls are 7/16” exactly and not some Porsche or Lobro “Unobtanium.”. Try your local bearing supplier.

Best,
Grady

When your balls get older, they often look deflated and limp. I dont know firsthand, but others have told me..............

Depending on the age of the balls it is very important to check them for lumps also, just ask Lance Armstong (who I hear has driven Pcars for years w/o checking for lumps)
