Anyway, it was right about this time that some of the watercooled refinement bit me, and I decided that I absolutely must have a 951. So, I flew to Texas to pick up this beauty from the nephew of the original owner. ![]() ![]() ![]() To say this car was beautiful would be an understatement. But after a few weeks of ownership, if began to be clear that the car simply did not want to be on the road. I took it in to my local mechanic to have the entire car freshened so my wife could use it (you know, the usual, new hoses, timing belt alignment, clutch, the usual tightening) and find two rather annoying things the PPI did not and would not catch, a slightly bent impeller blade on the turbo and a failing bearing in the back of the torque tube, ok fine...fix it and get it on the road....and so I did.................. Mind you, this moment of water cooled life was drawing funds away from the 911. This, of course, meant nothing to me at the time........

Ahhh yes the days when we had more Porsches than we new what to do with. Which brought me to the point of bordem with the water pumpers. They just seem too nice.....and the 951 was just brutaly fast. Holy cow that thing flew, but still it wasn't the same as the old 911s.
So I decided to go to a 2 911 family. I will post pics of that later tonight. I traded the 928 for a 77 911s with a built 3.0. Fun car!

So, where was I?..... Ah yes, the demise of the 951.
So, at this point, I finally get the 951 on the road, and am completely drunk with power, I mean this car was stupid, and of course, far from stock. I decide to use it as a daily driver. So, the first official trip it takes with me is to pick up a colleage of mine from the airport for a business meeting. All goes very well and, of course, he is impressed with the car. We work till about midnight, then I drop him at the hotel, and head home. About 1 a.m. I am two intersections from home, and the car starts to stumble at idle....buy the next intersection, it stalls and, in typical Porsche fashion, refused to restart! So now, I am forced to push the POS home. about 1/4 of the way home, a car load of drunk college students drive by; I am conviced they will taunt me.... To my shock, the designated driver graciously offers the services of his drunken friends to help push me home! With 4 drunken people power pushing and me steering, the 951 makes it easily into the garage where I proceed to kick it and go to bed. The next day I find a bad crank position sensor, a couple days later Pelican sends me a new one, and we are back on the road....for a while.... A few days later (4/21/2003 for those trying to keep a loose time line), I am driving home to switch cars. The day started off nice enough, but it had since turned very foggy and started to drizzle, not the best weather for car with that much turbocharged power. Much to my horror, masked by the fog and the rain, there is what can only be described as a bolder in the road ahead of me. I never saw it, but the sound it made when I hit it was ear shattering!! Within a fraction of a second, the dash is lit up like a christmas tree, and I have no oil pressure!![]() The point of impact.... All the oil the car had to offer.... To be continued..........

On the other side of the coin, as Jay is suffering with his 951 I figure I am going to start to dig into my 911 and start working on it......right?
NOPE!!!!!!!! The wife wants to move now. So now I will have no budget for at least then next 12 months as the new place we are purchasing can best be described as a "fixer-upper". I still refer to it as the Fing money pit. So for the next 6 months I have to pour all my money and time into remodeling a house. The new house does have charm as it is out in the country, (read middle of nowhere) has a beautiful 6 acres of land (read a lot of lawn to mow), and no neighbors (read farms all around.) However there is an upside to the new house...............IT HAS A POLE BARN to house all my cars and projects!...........but there is downside to the barn...........IT IS A PIECE OF CRAP!........pics to follow when I get home from work tonight.

turn oversize lawn into native prairie (see if the state lands dept. will cut you a grant or help somehow) - just mow paths thru it instead of cutting it all like a lawn
check to see if pole barn has a good slab; if not consider hot water piping when you pour the slab for it. be real real careful about parking in there until you are sure the roof won't collapse or shed during high winds. enjoy driving the back roads; watch for gravel and debris that falls off of farm trucks/trailers; and... don't scare the farmer-neighbors -- they will remember the color and type of car that bothered them

I hate it when I get to the middle of a story, but it has no ending (yet).

I get the feeling that this great story will never have an end....it's the gearhead's version of the soap Cindy watches...

OK as I promised here are some pics of the barn and money pit. The
is an old horse barn that had 3/4 of it concrete. The major problem with it is there were no lights, no locking doors or usable workshop area. I have been slowly working on it for the last 3 years and it is turning out OK. By next year it will be decent. ![]() ![]() Here is a current pic of it Here are some pics of the house and Jay and I working on the living room floor. It was quite a project, but turned out very nice. To keep this on Porsche topic, once I moved into the new place I didn't drive the 928 at all and I wanted a 911. Well I had no time with all the house projects to work on my 71 so I traded the 928 with a fellow Pelican head for a 77S with a 3.0. It was an OK car that cleaned up pretty quickly. Problem was I actually took some of the new parts I put on my 71 on the 77........doh!
