CV joint rebuild
Rebuilding my 1977 911 Carrera 3.0's CV joints, I disassembled the ball bearings from their carrier. Now attempting to replace the ball bearings into the carrier then enclosing the carrier with the sleeve, (metal joint), I am not able to slide the sleeve (metal joint) over the carrier with all 6 ball bearings in place.

The balls for those joints are available in 1/10,000 inch sizes.
I have found over the years that rebuiling them is not worth the effort, because you need a sterile environment to assemble them in. I have visited a factory where they are done and you could probably do open heart surgery on any of the benches....white coats...gloves...masks...air filtration systems...the whole nine yards. If any dirt or dust gets into the joint...it's life could be measured in seconds. With that info in mind...you will probably have to have sets of matching balls to size check for fit and clearance to get them right....keeping in mind that the housings are worn and will require an oversize ball to take up the slack. Good luck Bob

Do a search on "The Ultimate CV Joint Rebuld" or something like that started by Recalc. It's long, but it will tell you EVERYTHING.

You don't have to dissassemble everything to do the job...
I did mine a few weeks ago and removed most of the old grease in a varsol parts cleaner booth with a brush and then blew out all the excess with an air hose. Replaced all four boots and repacked with the kits that our host sells for under $50.00 dollars for both axles.

Go to this page and make sure you have reassembled the CV joint correctly. Won't work if you did it wrong!
