Another question about V8 conversions
I know this a touchy subject, and don't wish to evoke any neg. responses, but I was wondering is there anyone out that actually owns a 911 that has been converted to a Cheverolet V8 and done well. If so how much differant does the car feel, handling wise, compared to the stock form. Also did you have any cooling problems and what kind? The added wieght to the rear would seem to be offset somewhat by the add weight of the front radiator, sinse normal weight distribution is around 60/40. Thanks for what ever input you can provide.

Send an e-mail to Joe Saldas, alias "Joemofo" in Michigan. He's done a lot of these conversions, for himself and others. A fountain of information. Also try LT1911 and H2O911, both are freindly fellas and have converted cars. I was hot on the trail of a conversion myself when a curveball was thrown at me and I purchased a 930 motor instead (we'll see how that works out). I gotta believe if you did this conversion right (930 suspension) you'd have an absolute rocket that would handle as good as it goes for little maintenance cost. There is a post from a few weeks back warning of the purist backlash so I won't go into that.

911 v8 conversion
to ks911, as to your wondering about 911 v8 swap, i have finished one using all renegade parts with a ron davis radiator, they have a well balanced cooling system that works, i have a 930s widebody with a gt2 c4 kit and i absolutley love the car, faster than snot, and i updated all the suspension to sway away 31mm rear and 23mm front torsions with adjustable spring plates, all solid weltmiester bushings, stock turbo sway bars f/r,i used a 24 gallon fuel cell as to add a bit more weight up front, i used alum heads and intake, about 375hp to the road, i used the kevlar clutch, that is the only thing that would hold the torque. now for your question...cooling...on a 100 degree day on the freeway 80mph avg car runs at 185-190, after getting off a hot run and idleing in traffic the car will see maybe 210 untill you drive a bit to get the air flow again the its 185-190 again, on an 75-85 degree day, the car runs all the time at 175-185, and for you purists out there..i was one..... ONCE (i worked for a porsche /ferrari dealer)..then i drove the v8 911..ill never go back. i catch flack quite a bit but the last guy i ran (930) never did catch up to me, he did stop in however at my store about a week later as my car was parked in front and he remembered it well...his remark was... **@!! what the H!@! is in that thing?i let him peak at it....i dont think he will be the same, i even met up with an 06 vette on the freeway....he never caught up, unitill the off ramp he just waved politely and shook his head..i stoped looking at the speedo after 140 and i had a ton of pedal left, quite frankly the car scares the crap out of me, i am in no way good enough driver to open this beast all the way up. hope that answers your question :)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122519514.jpg

So what what was the total cost for the conversion? how long did it take?did you do all the work yourself? thought I'd ask before you start getting beat up.Looks like a nice job.:)

   WOW |
wow total cost without mistakes...?just the conversion parts were in the 6k range not counting motor, and i purchased a turbo trans that would handle the torque and hp , turbo trans will easily take 700+hp and 500+ ft lb torque, i didnt want to have to baby it at all that was 2500.00 actually i stopped counting after the first 100.00 anyway... it can be done for alot cheaper than i did it. i just got anal about even the wiring and the color scheme...i think you can do it for around 4k easily, i dont really recall all the prices (thats what i keep telling myself) :) and yes i did all the work myself, was really fun. i enjoyed every minute of it..bloody knuckles and all..hey if you dont draw blood your doin something wrong!

y1der, how about some pics of the whole car. That set up looks expensive. But I bet it really covers a lot of ground fast.

I would like to see the radiator and some details on that, ie holes.
|
very nicely done. I have seen some conversions with chopped up tails and distracting radiator/cooling holes everywhere.

WOW.
Kinda blows the whole issue of cheap horsepower though. It is obvious you have a ton of money and time in that machine. What are your impressions of the handling and excelleration vs a modded 930? |
Hi,
Man your garage looks GREAT , wish mine was that way, I love the car but my real question is: What is that on the floor, did you mask it and just use concrete paint or what ? Thanks Todd SmileWavy PS... I like the diamond tread parking mat. |
ks, i have a 71 911 coupe with 383 stroker motor...dynoed at 495 hp tied to a 930 gearbox. car weighs in at 2300 pounds. conversion was done with all renegade parts and has all the proper suspension and brake mods to make a good street machine. if the conversion is done right, it is not a cheap process, but the motor is so much simplier to maintain and upkeep. i did this conversion almost two years ago and have not had to touch anything other thatn routine maintenance. if you are not a purist and open to such a conversion then it could be the just the thing for you....good luck and if i can be of assistance let me know....maxwedge

y1der,
Very impressive! The outside is every bit as nice as the engine compartment. Or should I say, the engine compartment is every bit as nice as the rest of the car? I dunno. Either way, that is a great car. Well done. I like the arrangement of the Porsche and Chevy banners. Thanks for the pics. Dan |
cooling system
here is a pic of the cooling system from the gas filler looking out to the front , also the cover off the enclosure is off, i will try to load a couple of pics, thanks for all the comments, and yes once everything is dialed in...you put gas in it and drive many years, the handling is the same as a turbo, i am 40lbs heavier than stck turbo set up, but after all the ac torn out and the intercooler/oil cooler and the like i think im about 100lbs lighter total, my car weighed in at 2187lbs full of fuel(27 gal) and a sack lunch!
oh and the floor in the garage is vct tile , and the diamond plate is actually around the opening of my floor hoist..ill attach a pic of that also! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122856888.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122856997.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1122857193.jpg |
