My 75 w 3.6 and a 96 993...my thoughts

This week my friend is in the US so I am house, dog, cat, and car sitting. Now I have driven John's 993 for a few laps of the Nurburgring and really enjoyed how well the 993 is setup. But this week has kinda got me thinking and these are my thoughts:

1. The 993 is a great car for a daily driver!
2. Porsche got it right...performance, style and comfort all in one.
3. Solid gearbox, and the 6th gear is so nice on the autobahn.
4. Aircooled with a great oil cooling system...my 75 lacks this.
5. I should have saved my money and just purchased a 993.

Wonder if John would notice if I just exchanged cars.

My car is quicker...but this 993 is a complete package!

And the 993 seem to be holding their values better than the later water cooled 911's. I also have a 3.6 thats a blast to drive but, never driven a 993. sometimes I wish I'd bought one instead. The conversion cost alot of $$.

The 3.6 SC is a blast to drive, more of a beast. Like K9 said, the 933 is the complete package with AC that works, 6 fwd gears, better handling etc.

993's are great cars.. yes.. but a mid year with a 3.6 or 3.8 is the ONLY way to go. IMHO.

I have to disagree w/ you there partner

A nicely setup 993 is light years ahead of a 911 chassis, of course 996 and 997 are even better

I agree with Bill. Any Porsche newer than the older 911s we now have will be exponentially better. Yes, they'll weigh more, but the engines power and the suspension tuning has been adapted to the weight increases.

Overall, I think for the daily driver/occasional track car, each succeeding 911 year has shown itself as better than the last. Yes, you'll have exceptions such as '75-'77, particularly in California, but that was, in this case, a smog related issue outside of Porsche's engineering sphere, and therefore, control.

But this is true for almost any performance car. For another example, look at the BMW 3 series. The newest 3-series BMW sedan with the 3.0, is a faster, better handling car than the M3 of about nine or ten years ago.

That's one of the reasons these two companies are still in business.

Yup - I'm a little biased towards the benefits of a set-up 993:

But with the exception of the AC and Stereo, it's hardly a daily driver - quite raw and tightly sprung...

Since were comparing hot rods, my 72 with the 993 3.6 motor was awesome for sure, but it is more of a toy, a Sunday fun car. The 993s, with a few mods, are also great, and great at everyday errands, it just depends on what you want.

Its like this: I drove my 72 to the track, did two days worth of a DE, and then drove home. By the time I got home, I had a headache from the heat (August - 95 degrees) and woozy from the exhuast fumes, etc..

I drove my 993 to the similair event, and drove home with the windows up, A/C and stereo on. Nice drive.

Lap times were within 2 seconds of each other.

Both cars were setup basically the same way..

Ive made my decision...

The 993 works well for a DD if you don't need Lexus quiet and smooth.

You're fuched, player.

Owning the SC that was stripped down with no radio or AC made me not only appreciate a GT car that can do it all, but I really appreciate my Toyota more too. I love all the 911's, but the 993 is the hit parade for the aircooled cars.

I am glad to see that you see what I am talking about. Basically what I am going to start doing is converting my car to a track toy and serch for the 993 to become my daily driver.

Since you are in Germany you know the situation well .
We drive our Cars daily at high Speeds , between 120 and 160 MPH .
For sure a 964 or 993 is a better Car for this .
The Hot rod 3.6 Cars as well as the RS 964/993 ( uniball, Bilstein , no PS ) are much more fun on the Track and on winding Backroads .
My 964 Speedster is set up like this and i see it and use it like i did with a Motorcycle , my 993 TT is for beeing the King on the Autobahn on Sunday morning ( 200 + MPH ) the 993 or the 420 TE is the normal every Day car .
But the most Fun is the Speedster ,after a hard Day i just hop in it and after 15-20 min. i feel like i did with 25 , freed from the Threadmill and ready to Rock the world . If i had to pay the Pschyciatric for this it would be much more Money and of course not the Fun .

Does this reasoning that Porsche always made the new car better than the previous apply generally then ?

Are the SCWDP members finally ready to acknowledge the 3.2 Carrera as the better car ?

cmon Markus you know it's all about the driver...and displacement helps. lol

Mark, your car this is pretty much a spitting image of the 993 I have been flogging around this past week!

Just the wheels are not correct, 18" RH Supercups instead.

I didn't say the car was always better.

Porsche got much better and more sophisticated about the suspension, aero and dyamics of the cars, but only the GT3,RS and turbos got the good motors.

I agree w/ Harold my open top C3 is absolutly the nuts for a sunny day drive when you don't have to be anywhere at any particular time

I have never tried a 993 but promise myself to one day own one!.
The trick is to convince the wife 'why' I NEED two 911's!!!

So the question is:
Do you prefer the older 911's because they have more feedback from the steering and more involvement and have that cart-like feel with the lack of ABS, A/C and creature comforts.
Or do you love the culmination of decades of race inspire R&D with air cooled 911's to preduce the ultimate sports car?.

The facts still remain that they are both beautiful cars with their own appeals -different but similar!.

The trick is to do what Bill Verbug has done and own both!!!!

One day.......
