Speed Sensor Removal

The speed transmitter in my 84 seems to have quit.

I've removed the bolt and spring retainer, but the sensor is seized solid in the transmission. Any tips on how I might remove it?

Use a dentists pick or even a small knife. You just need to pry it out of the "hole".

I got the innards out with a screwdriver, the outerbody is still in the hole.

Is it exposed to oil on the backside? If so, I shouldn't remove it until I get my new one...

Nope, no oil.
It's a magnet -type device. You'll see once you take it out.

Then only part that comes out is the the piece with the wire attached. Was yours physically broken?

I think my switch seperated ....I guess i'll know better when I get my new one. The outer shell is still in the tranny.

Yikes, that's ugly. You should be able to get the outer shell out, though. I believe you could just dig/scrape the remaining plastic out and then clean it and be on your way.

Out of curiousity, what are the symptoms of a non-working speed sensor?

No speedometer, no odometer.

Typical failure mode is the gear failure in the odometer (I had that also) which leaves you with a functional speedometer, but no odomter.

If the switch has failed you lose the pulse train to the speedo & odometer so neither one works.

Yes, it's so destroyed I can't even confirm what exactly caused the failure.

I'll try to dig/scrape away at the remainder in the car. If that fails I'll pull the engine over the winter and address some tranny and oil issues at the same time.

just tap a small screwdriver under the edge and pry it out. it's just plastic.
