loud click

I have a 1981 930 which has 61000 original miles on it and runs very smooth and has even
compression. When I blip the throttle lightly there is a very audible (quite loud) click type of noise which seems to come from somewhere near the rear of the engine. It is just one click and done. It does not happen when I smoothly apply throttle. It also does
not happen when the car is turned off(not throttle linkage). Could this be a chain picking up slack or could it be bad tensioners? Is this click noise normal ? Is this something to concern myself over ? The car idles very smooth and quiet(no noisy chains)

That does not sound like anything associated with chains or tensioners to me! I'm not real familiar with 930's so I don't claim to say one way or the other whether it is normal or not. But, remembering back to racing in-car video and audio footage from 935's, I seem to recall some clicking and 'chirping' on over-run that was said to be wastegate noises ... and, of course, there is a wastegate low and at the back of your engine .. somewhere!!! My best 'guesstimate' is that there would be a pressure 'spike' within a second or two, if you blipped it to 4-5000 rpm, then released the throttle, so the big question is, how SOON after it hits high-rpm and you release the throttle, does the click occur?

Hi Jerry. Mine makes the same sound and I was told that it is the waste gate. I did a search here on pelican and found what seems to be a explaination. When you blip the throttle even a little, the turbo starts to push some air and given the lag time the throttle is already closed so the gate vents off this pressure change. This is my interpretation of the post. Look around and you can find all sorts of very good info. Warren in particular is a book that needs to be written. Enjoy your clicking, it turns heads at stop lights.
