need syncros & help
Shifting on my 84 Cab is very notchy. It’s been this way since I bought it (one year) I’ve learned to drive it OK though on downshifting from third, it’s best if I double clutch. Going into first at anything less than a walking pace is very risky.
Last weekend I did the Porsche maintenance class with Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods (highly recommended for someone like me who hasn’t adjusted a valve in 30 years). Mr. Anderson’s opinion is I need new syncro’s. My questions are. Is this expensive? Will driving the car and continuing the double-clutch down shift further damage the transmission? Is there a shop in the Santa Cruz area that is good for this? Thanks in advance Andy |

Before you make the decision to have synchro work done, I would strongly advise doing all of the simpler things to improve your shifting:
1. Do a 'quick flush' of your gear oil, i.e. drain and refill with 3.2 qt of Castrol, Valvoline, or Quaker State 75W-80 gear oil, then drive for 2-3 weeks or 200-500 miles, then drain again and refill with 3.2 qt SWEPCO 201 gear oil. 2. Change your clutch cable and be SURE the clutch pedal freeplay is adjusted to 15-20 mm as specified in the service manual! 3. Change ALL of the bushings for the shift rod: the 'cup' that the shifter ball rides in, the rod bushing just behind the shifter location, and both bushings in the coupler accessible through the access port just in front of the jump seats over the tunnel. The first two bushings need moly grease applied at installation. If, after doing all of the 'basic' easy things, shifting is a little 'balky' ... synchros and synchro hub replacements may be in order. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
