Windshield Install: Good-Bad-UGLY

Decided to do my own windshield install. Didn't trust the guy with the blue mohawk and nose-ring at glass plus to get it right.

Old trim came out with minimal distortion. Cool!
New seal from our host fit perfect. Cool again!
Installed old trim without issues. Unbelievable!
Removed old glass a seal easily without cutting. Amazing!
Absolutely no rust in windshield channel. God loves me!!

HOLY *****! What is this black nasty hardened sealer crap all up in the channel?? It won't come off! Whoever did the previous install must've used a whole tube of this evil spoo. It's pulling up the paint when I try to lift it. There's no way the new seal will seat with all this crap in the channel and I can't get it off without going to the metal all around the seal channel. F*ck me, now what?

You know, it's always the unexpected ***** that comes out of left field that kicks your ass every time.

Windshield install--No sweat.
Getting the devil's dog**** out of the channel-- Good luck!!
And, by the way, it's getting ready to rain and the garage is full.

Any thoughts on getting this stuff off appreciated.

Mike

good thinking - a blue mohawk is all wrong for the glass - the mohawks are coded like on aircraft carriers; he should have had a green mohawk for glass work

Anyway of getting a dremel type tool with a disc in there?
I have not done the windshield so I am not sure if it would fit.

Just found a piece of german newspaper wedged in the old seal. Appears this is the original install with circa 1986 Zufenhausen sealer. This stuff is like a cross between hard rubber and vinyl. I've got a method that's working but slow. Surgically remove the larger gobs down to .0025" with exacto knife. Scrub remainder briskly with tar remover. The stuff is slightly soluable so the last remnants can be removed without taking the paint. I should have the entire channel prepped for install in month or two. I better stock in lotsa Becks for the long haul.

Good time to send out the targa top for a recover and replace the cracked dashpad.

Endeavor to Perservere,
Mike

Mike,
Sounds like a hassle. I always expect the worst, and that's usually the way it turns out. If you chip some of the paint under where the seal goes, I would hust feather it down & put POR15 over the spots. Targa top & dashpad, heh? Sounds like "while you're in there syndrome" to me.
Have fun.

I guess Mr. Blue Mohawk gets the last laugh.

]Go to the hobby store and buy an xacto scraper blade. They have about 10k shapes to choose from. Once you are done cutting out the big chunks use cut up rags soaked in solvent to get rid of the rest. Lay the rag bits in the channel and keep them wet with solvent for a while. Then wipe.
