A/C delete, nearly there............
Got most of that A/C crap out of my car over the weekend.
I've owned the car for nearly 20 years, and it never worked so it's a victim of the new diet plan. Most of it came out cleanly, except for the left hose from the engine bay to the front condensor. It was just too tight and wouldn't come out in either direction so I cut it. Just need to get the cabin fan out. Questions: 1) what to do with the centre console and knobs. 2) should the front condensor protection bar stay out? It looks structural to me as it seems to connect the 2 front torsion bar mounts. 3) how have others plugged the holes created by the front condensor fan? I plan to use thin alloy slightly bent and screwed back in with self adhesive foam as a seal. And by the way, part of a good dietary plan is plenty of excercize, so we're off for a run!! See ya! suss |
Correction. The biggest pain in the a.... was the compressor bracket.
Most posts say you need to remove the muffler first but my flange nuts were nicely seized so I decided to leave those alone until SSI's. I had progree, albeit very slow by backing off the 2 nuts retaining the muffler support bracket, allowing the lower compressor nut to back out. here's all the cr..phttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1158702707.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1158702751.jpg All up weight reduction of around 29 kg or 64 pounds. Seat next, then SSI's & M + K |
I've had mine for 25 years. I did the SSIs & M+K already. I'm about ready to do the delete also.
|
John, I'm interested whether you did the heater backdate?
Phil |
No. I didn't do the heater backdate. It gets cold where I live and I haven't had the heat on yet with my SSIs.
|
I'll bet it looks good with all that useless garbage out of the engine bay.
1) Some people take out the console, when they do the a/c removal. I haven't decided whether I'm going that route yet. 2) My car is missing the bar you are talking about, so I need to find out if it is needed! 3) That's exactly want I did. Otherwise water can get in the front during heavy rain, driving through puddles. I removed my a/c a few months back. I can see the engine and work on it so much easier. I left my evaporator fan in the smugglers box, since I want to rig it up to blow fresh air. If you want to clear up more junk, do the heater backdate too. |
Leave the fan and the evap box in the car. Simply remove the evap itself and use the fan for ventialtion. I did this and I am glad I did. It also helps with the heat since it blows air fron the little outside vents. Remove the temp control knob and use a little rubber plug for the hole or an alarm light. Keep the fan you will be happy you did. JMO

2) The bar is not structural. I took mine out. 3) I did similar. I bought some thin aluminum sheet metal, cut it with tin snips, drilled holes, and screwed the sheet in. I used some silicon caulk to seal it instead of the adhesive foam. I used the same solution on the hole from the pasenger footwell to the smuggler's box. This is where the cabin fan is located. Take out the passenger floor board, and you'll see four screws to get it out. |
The Aussie cars don't have the American "smugglers box".
Our evaporator box is in the cabin behind the passenger (left side for us) footrest. Does that mean the A/C fan is the one behind the dash? This leaves 3 fans (if the engine compartment fan is deleted)- the A/C fan behind the dash and the 2 footwell blowers. Will a heater backdate incorporate all these 3? Rick, can you see from my photos if our systems are different to yours? Jeff, I believe the bar is not really required but some guys use it as a front jacking point. I'm a little concerned about that and would need reassurance from someone more experienced. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1158706844.jpg getting there slowly. Sound insulation gone before it got sucked into the airbox |

It looks like the same thing as my SC only reversed. It has been a while since I have had the carpeting and stuff out of my car. It's too bad you don't have the ducts, etc like our cars have, it is very nice to flood the car with fresh air since there are no manual vents. |
sus911 -
Do you plan on connecting fresh air to the vents? If you do, let us know what you do please. |
Rick,
which ducts do you mean? Where do they go & come from? |

good job. dont it feel good to have all that crap out of there? your pics have showed me a couple of items i missed thanks!
my console is gone. i pushed the wires back through the hole then put a black platic plug in looks great. feels great front condensor fan hole plugged with aluminum sheet, using existing screw holes. 20 minute job keep the bar, looks like mine has road rash, helps protect the front end i think. keep fan. |
Next project is to get rid of that engine compartment fan.
Me thinks a little more work from what I've read, not only air plumbing but engine tin. Also not sure what to do with that plastic shroud over the top of the engine. This must be done in conjunction with SSI and new exhaust i believe |
thanks Brett.
Would you jack from the bar? |
sus, dont jack from the bar. i use the jack points (get a jack pad for that-they slip into the factory jack ports). there are alot of good posts regarding good places for jack stands. this is also where waynes book provides some great advice and know how.
i also got rid of my (non working) engine compartment blower motor. you will have to splice those hoses together so you dont let heat into your engine compartment. i also blocked off the air that comes out of the cooling fan with aluminum sheeting. that i get more air to the cylinders during the summer. i will try to post a pic |
Howdy,
If any of you guys want to sell your deleted a/c, I'd be interested in buying it. Hal |
I've got a quick queston. Sorry to hi-jack this thread.
My A/C was deleted by a PO. The fan that was in the smuggler's box is gone. Is there anyway to route ventilation air through thw center and side dash vents? -Matt |
Brett,
I would appreciate it (photo). I drove the car last night and got quite a bit of heat into the engine bay. I was mistaken that this wouldn't happen with the autoheat switched off. This may require another thread as I removed the blower and wired it straight to the battery and it worked but would not work when hooked up to its connector. I tested the connector with a multimeter and go a reading of at least 12v................puzzling. Hal. I would be interested in selling mine. Problem is..........Australia. A possible freight solution is a good friend of mine works for QANTAS and does shifts up to LA quite regularly. He is bringing me back some SSI headers, oil lines and M + K muffler back on next trip (around 4 weeks). Question is then how to Houston. Maybe just sea freight the lot? Matt I'm no means an expert but I am looking at doing the same thing so as to use those centre vents. I think it's purely a plumbing/ducting issue. I'll be looking at that over the weekend. Phil |
MAtt,
yoiu could buy an aftermarket fan (like one that goes into a VW Bug) and hook up the hoses. they have the same electrical connections and will run off of the switch on the console. i am in the process of doing that with my car. |
Done a og time ago. also delate the dash controlls and replace it with a stero deleate plate with 2 racing switch 1 for a front oil cooler fan and he other for turn on the fog lights.

sus,
Any idea of the HP gain w/o your A/C (excluding the weight of all the removed bits)? Thank you! |
The only gain excluding weight is no fan turning compressor which is negligible because it has a clutch.
Butt dyno and tells me car is lighter and more spritely- definitely. Ride height has come up 1/2" or so. I did take out spare, tools, jack etc. plus some trim which has shaved some weight off. I also put on the Rennline strut brace and the car is really firm and nimble. Next step is install the TTE's, racing seat then corner balance etc. I'm roughly adjusting the ride height down and have it at around 25.5F 25R but would like it lower I think. It's getting progressively better! |
I'm curious about one of the parts you have in the 1st picture you posted. I've circled it. It doesn't seem to be something that I've seen before in US market cars. When the A/C was operational what vents did it flow from.
There are a few posts explaining how to remove the rear blower from the engine compartment and just use the footwells. The engine compartment controller needs to be modified. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1158845216.jpg |
Sus,
i recommend the an Odyssey motorcycle battery also. I have one and alot of guys on this forum also have them. i think its the 640 (do a search) it only weighs 14lbs and has no problem cranking the car. it will work for you if you in the Australian climate. also i recommend getting rid of your back seats. they are heavy and useless. finally, you could delete your windshield washer reservoir. with fluid that sucker weighs 20 lbs! |
Ron.
It seems our cars are somewhat different. No smugglers box and the avaporator and fan resides in the cabin behind the passengers (left side) footrest. When the A/C was operational, is used the center vents on the dash only to my recollection. The part you circled is from connects the air between the 2 footwell blowers , is ducted to the eveporator/fan and also connects through the firewall to windscreen ducts. I think I know about the thread dealing with the egine comp. controller modification, but its a little complex. Do you know of any others? |
Sorry Ron, forgot to paste the link to the other thread........
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=258473&perpage=20&pagen umber=2 |
LOL, that was the thread I was refering to. Its actually a very simple modification. You remove the tin cover from the engine compartment controller and jumper the reed switch. The autoheat system operates the way it always did except the rear blower is removed.

What is this thing that looks like a mirror where the front air condenser used to be?
Quote:
|
Looks like just a piece of sheet Aluminum he cut to fit the opening where the front condensor fan formerly sat. This is just to keep water/dirt/rodents out of the trunk.
|
I've got one, too. It has almost a mirror finish. Kind of mysterious...
|
Rick and Jk, I too am debating on the a/c delete. The PO of my car already deleted most engine compartment components but I would like to take it further. No need for A/C in Montana. I did a search but did not find a whole lot on exactly what should come out. I too would like to utilize the fan for fresh air. Can you point me in the direction i should follow. I would like to get all mechanicals done on the car before paint next winter.
|
Beartooth,
Theres alot of ac delete threads that'll steer you in the right direction. If it's any help I just started with the compressor and traced everything forward. Getting the lines out was the hardest part, as well as filling the old holes. A bentley or Waynes book also help trace components. I took everything out. I don't see the need for fresh air being blown into the cabin through vents when I have two windows that let plenty of fresh air in ;) Plus what good is a smugglers box when it's full of car crap? ;) |
Look here for fresh air through the center vent info:
