What Weight Of Oil For A 69?

Ok I really wish the 912 forum would get as big as this 911 Forum but I don't think thats going to happen I can't get any responses on anything in there. So maybe you guys could help me out.

I am about to do my first oil change in my 1969 912 and I have the filter and gaskets and stuff. But now it's time to buy the oil.

I need to know what weight would be best for the car? I drive pretty hard and rev the engine pretty high (in gear of course) so I need somthing that will hold up good and protect the engine. I am going to be using a Non-synthetic oil mainly because of the price.

I live in Kentucky so it never ever gets under 40deg Far in the summer here. And usually never gets over 90-deg.

I was thinking maybe 20w-50? Or do I need SAE30? I'm just really confused this is my first air-cooled car. So help me out guys what weight would you use?

Thanks!

Oil brands are a matter of preference but I use and recommend Valvoline racing 20/50 or Castrol 20/50.Chevron and Unocal 76 is also a good brand
Pennzoil and Quakerstate are made with parrafin and leave sluge and varnish
I know because I owned a carwash/lube center and we used Pennzoil which due to there great advertising most people wanted
Id p*** in my oil tank before I would put that stuff in

Yea I was gonna use either the Valvoline racing 20W50 or some Exxon SuperFlo 20w50. But I noticed that in the owners manual it says to use like SAE30 or somthing and I was just wanting to make sure that 20w50 would protect the motor and be good for it.

So the Valvoline VR1 20w50 Racing should be just fine for the car, right?

Yep! Used to use the Valvoline Racing 15W-50 in my hot-rodded VW flat-fours and it works fine, just like it does in 911s! Castrol GTX 20W-50 works great, too! The owner's manual in my 911S says SAE 30 weight, also, but that recommendation is a little 'dated' to say the least!

Last summer I tried running Bel-Ray 20W50 synthetic motorcycle oil in my hot-rodded VW. The engine seemed to like it, and I even drove the car from Toronto to Long Isalnd, NY and back with no problems.

It was interesting to note in an earlier post that Pennzoil and Quaker State are made with parrafin. What's the difference in motorcycle oil? My admittedly unscientific reasoning for using it in my Bug was that many motorcycles have air-cooled engines as well, so what the hey. I noticed that I get about 5 psig more oil pressure at any given oil temperature/rpm combination than before.
