Check your Half shafts: Saftey issue
for those with older porsches (the ones with Just oil in them), get your half shafts check'd out. Chances are most people just over look this item.
I was getting tech'd for an upcoming DE and one of the boots had split (dry rot/age). No Problem, just replace all 4 of them. As I am a Questioning type of person, I asked the Tech Mech to check for radial play between the Wheel and Tranny (via half shaft). They had more radial play than Vanilla Ice at the peak of his career.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/.../smileysex.gif Seems they are supposed to last 80,000 - 100,000/Mi normal to spirited driving. i have 126k on the car. You dont want to endup on the side of the road when one of these let go! After replacement: Smoother shifting, No Gurping of the Gears, No thrumming noise at highway speeds. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...boldyellow.gif |
I agree.

But Grady - There is supposed to be some play built-in just based on the geometry of the rear suspension. On any 911, if you grab the half-shaft, will have lateral movement between CVs, no?? As the rear spring plate arm goes up and down, the distance between the outer and inner CVs changes.

Bob,
Absolutely. I misunderstood and thought he was talking about radial movement or circumferential play, not uncommon with dry, rusted and worn out CV joints. The axle shafts (between the CV joints) have 1-2 cm of axial movement. An ’88 Carrera has the best of the CV joints. They are the big 108 mm 6-bolt (M10) axles, same as a 928S. Best, Grady |
I was talking radial movement...wheels should not spin as much as they were when in gear.
