you mentioned the pass side turbo hit the oil tank. could you alaborate on that? It appears you would need a short piece of tubing to connect the turbo to that shorty header, couldn't the turbo be mounted low enough to gain clearance? do you have any pics?
|
You don't want to mount the turbo too low of course but it still won't fit. There must be room to plumb all 4 inlets and outlets. Tuner shops that do these conversions modify the stock oil tank. They simply cut a chunk out and weld it up.
I think I have a picture somewhere of my mock-up, will have to look for it. |
Best to move the oil tank to the front of the car anyways.

You can use a '72 oil tank and lines or adapt those from a 965 and put the tank in front of the passenger's rear tire.

Brian's idea is the easiest and very clean by far, also that is how mine is setup right now. :) (the 965 setup that is)

This was a great read. Although Brian has abandoned this project I have ordered a set of headers from him to do what he intended in this thread with his help. Twin k16's rear mounted on an EFI 3.2ss Turbo motor. This thread has a lot of good information as well as pictures of several configurations.
drmatera: You are local to me and seam to be looking to do the same thing. Maybe we can collaborate on this project? |
jonesb930 - sure, two heads are better than one. I've got a set of 993TT Fabspeed headers coming. I originally wanted to rear mount the turbos but with a/c it makes plumbing very tight. With the side mount turbos you can plumb them like a 993 with the pipes coming up alongside the valve covers. I'm not 100% on where to mount the air filters (inside engine compartment / under car) but that will be decided when i figure out oil tank location. A friend of mine stopped by in his 993 S that has a proto tech twin turbo kit.... I drooled over it for awhile and it gave me some good ideas. Do you know Bill Bentos from Fuzion powder coating?

drmatera: Air filters should be placed above the heat shield. Not good idea to mount below because you want cold air to go into intake. I have seen some configurations where they put air filters directly on the turbos IMHO that is not a good idea.
BTW: if ever your cold air inlet to the turbos break off or fall off, the turbos become nasty vacuum cleaners and suck up anything on the road. I know of a 993TT that went airborne, dropped and knocked off the intake pipes to the turbos, the open turbos proceed to gobble up and inject gravel and compressor metal into the engine - not a pretty result. |
yeah, that was a concern of mine.
