If the high and low beams both are working fine, that pretty well rules out a relay problem, so my suspicions have to be a control 'stalk' switch contact or connector/wire corrosion problem.
My first suggestion would be to locate two bundles of wires going down the left side of the steering column from the turn signal/headlamp control switch 'cluster.' Try disconnecting the rectangular (10-pin, I think) connector, and inspect for corrosion. You can clean both male and female connectors with isopropyl alcohol and Q-tips, or an old soft toothbrush ... Be VERY CAREFUL, as the pins and sockets are soft silver-plated copper or brass!!! If no corrosion is found on wires or connectors and the flasher circuit is still inoperative, the switch assembly will need to be taken loose from the steering column for cleaning. Again, isopropyl alcohol is preferred, though some of the spray cans of the 'brake parts cleaner' may be able to get into hidden recesses, but test plastics with a Q-tip of the cleaner for destructive or damaging solvent action. A 'Windex-type' spray bottle cap can be screwed onto some alcohol bottles, and possible damage from alcohol is a low risk. There are no diagrams detailing the layout of the switch assembly, so careful inspection will be required to find the correct switch contacts. Good luck! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I had trouble getting high beams and also flash. I took the switch off the column and noticed the contacts which as I recall are metal strips. Not much room in there. My recollection is q-tips are too big. I used one of those cardboard nail files wives sometimes have lying around. Fine abrasive on both sides. I also don't recommend getting married just for this perk.
It worked fine, restored both troublesome functions. No trouble since. ------------------ '83 SC |
