Need some more help re car not starting
I have a 1983 911sc. Car sat for several months, I charged the battery and now it won't start. I received a suggestion from this forum to try starting fluid, I did that and the engine started for a second. Based on the prior suggestion, I believe I have a fuel problem.
How do I tell if in fact the engine is not getting fuel, or is it time to take it in to the mechanic. I am a novice , but willing to try a few things before giving up. Thanks |

Take off the rubber boot for the air sensor plate, use a magnet on the center bolt of the sensor plate and lift the sensor plate, the ignition switch should be turned to the run position (not start position) and see if you can hear the fuel pump running and the injectors humming, do not do this for any length of time if the injectors are humming because you will fill the cylinder with gas.
If you don't hear the fuel pump pumping, then your fuel pump is probably stuck from sitting. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 09-16-2006 at 06:45 PM.. |

The fuel pump is not rebuildable.
You can disconnect the fuel line in the engine compartment, put the hose end in a container, and put the ignition in the run position so the fuel pump turns on. You may need to take off the air cleaner and move the flapper by hand to engage the fuel pump. If you're getting good flow and the fuel pump is not overly loud, it's probably not the fuel pump. If it starts and then dies, it sounds like a warm up regulator issue (WUR). This can be tested with a set of CIS gauges (available from Pelican).

Do a search. Do you have any of the PORSCHE repair manuals? If not pick up a manual. |

You can run a jumper wire from a constant 12VDC source to the Fuel Pump relay. The FP motor should run.
