Has anyone used a std engine stand in place of a porche stand during a rebuild ?

Yes I have. It takes a little modifying but works fine.

Yes, I've got a 930 on one right now. You need to drill holes farther up the arm on two of the attachment legs where they attach to the stand faceplate. If you mount the arms to the rear of the motor and position the stand plate you will see where the holes need to be. Cost me a whopping $35 total.

Yes. I went to the salvage yard and bought the "clutch cowl" (intermediate piece between the motor and transmission) from a wrecked automatic VW beetle for $25. The motor end bolts perfectly onto my 79SC. The "cowl" was drilled and bolted to the mounting studs of a standard motor stand. Total cost of the assembly including stand approx. $65 U.S.
