Question GKN 12 Point Axle Shaft CV Bolts, SOURCE?

Okay Fellas,

I got hit by an Idiot stick and used a 6 point Torx star instead of the 12 point star to remove my CV joint bolt from GKN. Tip to tip 56MM (minus head 47MM) X 8MM.

For the life of me I can not find a replacement and GKN is absolutely no help at all.

Anyone have a source for couple of 12 point star bolts.

Moral of the story, do not wrench in the dark, literally at night, can't see shiesse.

TIA,

Jim

Yo

Hey man, maybe this is a dumb question, but why not just get another type of bolt in the same size? Does it have to be 12 point star?

Given the opportunity, I would replace any Torx or triple square bolt/nut I find if a replacement can be obtained. As I hear, they are only used by manufacturers because automated assembly equipment at the assembly plants work better with those fasteners. Later for us, simply a PIA and tool box filling activity. Just got me a 2012 GTI and not looking forward to all those goofy 3x square fasteners.

Jim,
How many do you need? I might have some in my hardware stash.

I think I have some servicable bolts. I'll check the garage in a bit...
But does the 85 915 use the same bolts? I know they changed the flange/bolts somewhere in the run of the 915 Carreras.

There are plenty available from VW suppliers for beetles and the like.

Brakes / Rear Suspension : CV Joints / Axle Boots Bug - Dune Buggy Parts, Sandrail Parts, VW Parts - MooreParts.com

I would tend to replace them all with Holo-Krome Allen Socket screws as they will be very well quality controlled.

Many of the newer bolts (either ordered by part number, or included in the CV joint kits) use internal hex instead of the internal triple square.

Holo-Krome is the brand I use. I also use 6-point sockets as they are more universal.
