SC vs. Carrera brake pad prices!

Holy 'Moly!

Just got a set of front Carreras for my 1980SC and... yikes! $141 vs. $63 for pads alone! Rears are also 2x! Wow... I thought they were rather similar.

Oh well.. small change in the grand scheme, but unexpected the way that some time happens...

According to BA's book, the Carreras had thicker rotors front and rear than the SC's. Carreras also had larger rear caliper pistons.

At first, I thought something was off about the difference in cost btwn SC & Carrera. So I went on PP and I found this:

Ferodo, Front Brake Pad Set, Steel 'A' Caliper, 911/912E (late 1975-83)
PEL-PP-901811 $40.40

Ferodo, Front Brake Pad Set, 911 Carrera (1984-89)
PEL-PP-901815 $141.55

There is a huge difference in price.

Then I found that one set that fit both SC's and Carreras.

BHP Performance Brake Pad Set - A Caliper, FRONT 911 (1974-89)
BHP-S0011 $156.75

I think the pads are the same. The only possible difference is that the Carrera pads *can* have the notch for the sensor. Otherwise, the pads are identical. I have been using "SC" pads in my Carrera calipers for years. No sense in paying a price differential unless you really need the notch for the sensor.

As Mike(IROC) has said, the pads are tahe same except that the Carrers have provisions for sensors which aren't needed,

Thanks for the advice folks, I'll go with the SC pads.

Any advice on pad brands? I was just going to get the Ferodos on PP, but I noticed a set of Duralasts on ebay for all of ten bucks, but that somehow seem dubious.

For street use i always liked Repco Metalmasters now sold as Axis or PBR Metalmasters.

Others have voiced a preference for Ferodo 2500.

Older BV advice and some other experts:

normal street type pad that works well when cool to luke warm.
Good choices:
* Axxix/ PBR metal master
* Pagid Blue
* Ferodo 2500
* textar yellow box
* PFC carbon metalic
* Jurid
* Hawk HPS

- Bill V.

Steve Weiner likes either Mintex "red box" or Ferodo 3410 pads for
street use

Pete Zimmerman likes Jurid or Textar

- I am too lazy to change out the Orange Pagids on my street car, but someday I will...

The Ferodos I recently purchased from our host worked great at my 1st DE at Sebring and were reasonably priced. Support our host you won't regret it.

One of the very nice features of the Metalmasters was the very low dust levels.

Pagid Blue, Jurid, Textar all throw off huge amounts of dust.

Never used the others

I just ordered a set of Metalmasters from our host. They were about $100 less per pair than the price thulsadoom was given for the Carrera pads. And my car is a C2! My total was about $90 shipped. I'm pretty sure the pads will have a provision for the sensor-which I bypassed anyway.

Also, Pelican only lists the front pads for the Metalmaster C2 app., but unless I'm mistaken, The fronts are the same as the rears.
