Turbo a 2.4 (or 2.2)....Crazy?
I have the opportunity to buy a rebuilt (stock) 2.2 T engine fairly cheaply. Have collected most of the parts i need for turboing my 3.0 (stock euro exhaust, k27, stock wastegate, etc), and started thinking... before rebuilding my still running but leaky 3.0, what about turboing this early engine and playing with it while the 3.0 is in surgery . Will the stock Magnesium case/ internals/P&C's handle conservative boost settings? Has anyone here done it? Thanks to all.

Nah … Use the 3.X for turbo charging. It is a far more robust engine for that use than the 2.2T.
With a turbo, you want the largest displacement possible to give good off-boost performance. Sure Porsche built 2.1 Turbos but they were dedicated light weight race cars. You don’t want that for street use. Use the 2.2T to keep your 911 running while you go through the 3.0. Build a 3.2 or larger with 7.0:1, big intercooler, twin plugs and a lot of engine cooling. Best, Grady

The 2.2 T crank is not the forged equivalent of the 2.4 counter balanced crank. The 2.2 T compression is 8.0:1, IIRC, whereas the Turbos from Porsche ran 7.0:1, didn't they? Not being anywhere near the turbo expert here, I'd run a very conservative boost.
Otherwise, why not? There's a lot of knowledge to be gained with a project like this and you can forward your findings back to the board. Personally, I see the turbo as a way to compensate for a restricted induction such as the CIS (compared with 6 throats). How would you handle the induction on the 2.2? |

Wow, didn't expect to hear so soon from two of the boards most experienced members... thanks guys! I have already EFI'd my 3.0, and have fabribacted an iduction sytstem using the stock 3.0 CIS runners and a stock 930 IC similar to Oscar's setup
intercooler mounting on my 2.7 turbo EFI Tuning a smaller displacement engine with the EFI will be based on what other guys have done here. Per Grady, my only concern is that this engine (rebuilt stock except timecerts) will grenade in short order. Only one way to find out though, right?

I guess we are concerned to not expense a good engine (the 2.2T).
With your EFI experience, you should be able to have the mixture vs. boost under control. I suppose I could find a “nuclear explosion” graphic to post here but I think you understand the massage. I’m not in favor of expending engines unnecessarily. With your expertise and help from the Forum, you can creep up on very high performance with your 3.X. You can do that by starting with 6.0:1 CR, a smaller turbocharger and lower maximum boost. All of these are easy to adjust for greater performance when you have your system settled down. Good data acquisition will help a lot! Best, Grady
