Another A/C question, but an easy one

Here's the thing. When I bought my car the the a/c compresser was not there. The previous owner told me that the first owner removed ot for weight purposes ( yeah right). I am also missing the swithch on the lower console for the a/c (the one on the left). I don't know why that switch is missing. I thought that I was only missing those two parts but I was at a PCA Concours yesterday and noticed another 86 with a condenser under the wing. I have a condenser in the front, do I need to get one for the back too? Living in Montreal, I don't really need a/c but I am planning a trip to Florida so I want to get it working again. I was just wondering if my car should have two condensers.
Thanks for your help.
Mike

Needed? no but it would help cool it better if you had one there too and use a rotory compressor when you change.

Mike, Stop by Daytona if you get a chance.

Where is Daytona in relation to St. Petersburgh... I'll check my map! So your saying I should get the second condenser? Did some models have one and others two?
Yhanks

Use 2 if you can it can only help but I don't recall any cars coming with 2. I think there was a add on setup though.

If you go down I95 and turn on Rt 4 (it starts in Daytona) you will hit the west coast ( st. pete) in about 5 hrs. Not that close.

Too bad, I think I could have can convinced Bill France Jr. to delay the "Pepsi 400" (a little NASCAR Race) so we could have taken a few laps on the track.

Well, If your ever on the east coast of Fla drop in.

That would be cool, more than cool! Speaking of cool, you say that you dont recall 911's ever having two condensers, but I have one in the front lying flat under the front valance and I saw another 86 with a condenser under the rear lid, though I didn't notice if it had one in the front. Where should my condenser be, front or back? I have an a/c hose that looks like it should hook up to a rear mounted condenser.. I don't know, I am soo confused!!!

Mike,

The standard condensor on an SC or Carrera would be on the rear decklid. Auxilary options were also avalaible(and standard on many models). These auxilary condensors are located under the front suspension mounts ar fender mounted(with fan). Either option produces far colder results. I am also located on the east coast of Florida and the additional condensor is invaluable. I think I may also have some Carrera condensors either fender or decklid in storage. Good luck with it.

Had an 87' targa, and it did have two condensors! Needed because not enough room for one big normal size condensor, so they split it to get enough airflow on both of them. Hope this helps.

All 911's have had 2 condensors (one under the decklid, one up front) since at least 1981 (maybe 1980).
When the 911 had only one condensor, it was the the one under the decklid.
I think you really need the one under the decklid to get any kind of cooling in a 911.

Hmmmm...that's funny...my 71e model (had) two
placements for it. One under the rear grill, and another just in front of the gas tank. looking under my front hood I can see a raised stamp of metal in front of the spare..that's the small one....

Yes, some of the earlier ones also had 2 condensors, I guess I was not clear.
My point is this: All 911s since 1980 or 81 came with 2 condensors. Some of the earlier ones did, too. But, some of them didn't (i.e. 78-79 SCs, maybe others). In the instances where an earlier car came with only one, it was the one under the decklid.

Oops!

Jim, thanks for clearing it up I was ref. to a couple threads: procooler 04-01-2000 & one started by JB 04-02-2000 that talks about an add on auxillary unit that mounts in the front left fender.

My car is a 77 911s (only a rear) and I thought that the later sc's had a front style.

Since I have a V-8 in mine (soon to be running) I am using a large one (non-P style) that lays across the radiator and really had no reason to investigate the (1 or 2?) matter any further. Thanks to all that informed me of my ignorance and Mike sorry for the Bum info.
