Torsion bar opinions
I'm putting a more powerful (and slightly heavier 1992 C2 3.6) engine in my 73 T, and plan on changing the torsion bars to 26 or 28mm.
Having only ever driven my car (which I think has been left stock, suspension-wise), I'm trying to guess how big a difference this is going to make in the ride -- both on the street and on the track. My questions: How big a difference is there between 26 and 28mm bars? Am I going to be knocking my fillings loose if I roll over a speed bump? What was the stock set-up on a 73 T in terms of torsion bar size, and presence of sway bars? The '73 models ALL (T,E,S,RS) had 18.8 mm ft, 24.1 mm rr torsion bars. The 'T' had no sway bars standard, but the same 15 mm/15 mm set standard the 'S' and 'RS' was optional for the 'T' ... also, all 930 Turbo's from '76-'89 have had 26 mm rear torsion bars to compensate for the heavier engine.
I don't think the spring rate of the torsion bars contributes as much to harshness as the brand and model of struts and shock absorbers. I have driven T's with Boge's that seemed a lot less harsh than my car when stock with it's optional KONI's ... same torsion bars! I switched to Sway-A-Way 21 mm front and 28 mm rear torsion bars, and 19 mm adjustable anti-roll bars front & rear, and every bushing has been changed to poly-graphite. It also has 225/50VR-15 and 285/40VR-15 Pirelli P7's under the turbo flares. It isn't as rough/noisey as a '60's Corvette convertible ... with their 'cowl shake syndrome,' but it is close! But it goes where it is pointed, on the street or at autocrosses, and that IS what I wanted!!! It doesn't get challenged by very many front engine cars, rice-burner, or otherwise ... I don't know if it is the car's 'primer-look' from Harper, or my Dennis Hopper-style '1000-yard stare in a 20-foot room' from 'King of the Hill' ... ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 06-19-2000).] |

I put adjustable Weltmeisters front and rear on my '73T. Didn't change the ride at all in terms of harshness. Very big (huge) difference in handling. I then changed shocks, this did make it a little harsh on the street.
