What to use for a spare? with 993 brakes

So - I just had a revelation - if I got a flat tire with my 993 brakes - my 15" spare ain't gonna cut it.

Anybody have a spare 16" 951 7 poking around? Would that fit on the back? Maybe I need to look for a BBS 7 but what universal offset to use front or rear??

What do you have??

Great question.....

Probably have to replace the spare with a can of fix-a-flat and a 12 volt compressor....

Jeremy:

Use a 964 spare. Those are light and will fit over the 993 brakes,...

Isn't the offset wrong? I remember my wheels on the 964 had offsets that were in the 50's...

As you guys ponder solutions, think about this:

Spares should never be "fitted in the back" anyway....

For a front flat...re-fit with the spare...

For a rear flat....jack up one side of car....place front good tire to rear...now place spare on front....

Saves wear and tear on the "differential" or LSD function of the rear of the car !

maybe the unloved "design 90" wheel would do the trick? due to their popularity and demand they have got to be cheapest...

Sounds like a great idea, but can you get the entire side of the car up with the factory jack??? I'm thinking on the road here and not in my garage,

996TT spare is the key. It's what I use -

Bill,

Did you find the time to try your 993 spare?

Thx

I have a 996 spare that fits, but it doesn't fit inside the gas tank well at all.

Doesn't a 993 use a 175-16 folded spare???...this seems to fit the gas tank "hole" space even on the older cars that use a 5.5x15 steel wheel and a 155 folded spare.

...and I presume a 993 spare could be installed (as a spare) on an OEM car with 993 brakes.

FWIW a 996TT spare fits perfectly -- and will fit any brakes with no problems.

Craig,

(1) Is the 996TT spare 16" or 17"?

(2) And its fits in an '89 and earlier gas tank? (The 993 spare is a 16" piece, and I can attest it fits, albeit tightly, in a 911 tank)

(3) Photos of the 996 spare in the tank?

I believe it is a 16". Goes right over the 'big reds'. Fits right in my gas tank cubby in the 930 with room to spare. About an inch all around.

The 996TT calipers take 2474 pads vs. the 1842s - both are about the same size.

I looked all over for a in-trunk pic, but can't find one.

Why do you need to jack up the whole side?

Raise the front, swap spare, set car down, raise rear, swap front tire on rear, lower car, place flat rear in back seat, go home.

This may help the thread - my 930 with 996TT spare - plenty of clearance:
