What is going on with my airbox? Strange?
I'm breaking down the engine in my 1980 SC Targa. My airbox was replaced by the PO and has been repaired once after it was installed. It's been ok for me but I figure while I have everything out I would replace it and possibly repair it for a backup.
Well, so far there are a lot of odd things with the CIS including a fuel line set up that Len said was something he hadn't seen before. Good times.. Anywho.. The intake manifold hoses/sleeves look like they are step down/up hoses or something.. is that normal? When looking at replacements for my car, I haven't seen any like this for sale. Did the PO put the "cheaper" airbox in this and buy these adapter sleeves/hoses? Here is what I have: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is the sleeve that is suggested for my car.. it doesn't look like the ones I just pulled. ![]()

smt is definitely wrong, they should align in diameter 1:1
it looks as if you have the wrong airbox base to fit the intakes

Intake runners........
Tom,
You have the correct intake runners (-2R) with 34-mm ID for 80~83 CIS USA spec. but with the wrong air box. The 38-mm ID CIS air box is for 78~79 CIS USA and 78~83 ROW specs. You should have the smaller 34-mm ID air box for 80~83 CIS USA spec. And to add more confusion, the CIS air boxes for -2R runners are identified or described as 38-mm CIS air box by the vendor/s because they are using the OD of the airbox runner instead. So this is where the controversy occurs. Tony |

So what are my options here? Do I purchase the correct airbox? And if I do, will everything I have taken off this airbox (except the sleeves) work with the new correct airbox?

If it was the other way around (larger runners with smaller airbox ports) then I'd change it. But smaller runners pulling through bigger ports shouldn't (?) be an issue. The airbox is simply a cache of air that the throttle body is metering air into. I don't see how this is more restrictive than the "correct" setup?

Michael, I think the bigger issue for me is I'm not super sure that these sleeves are made anymore. That being said, if I'm going to buy a new box I would like to move to stock BUT I don't want to replace every component on the new box if my old stuff doesn't fit.

Just a suggestion to answer your question...
Access a PET (used to be a digital copy on the PCA site) and compare the part numbers of components for the two systems. (throttle bodies, spiders, etc.) |

Pmax,
Thanks. I'm going to order one up and test this old one for resell. It does have the spider in it so there is some value for someone right there.

Something I find really interesting here - this airbox identifies the plastic it's made from. "PA66GF25" indicates polyamide 66 (nylon) with 25% glass fiber filler. I haven't seen an airbox with that stamp before (and the question of "what's my airbox made of" always comes up).

The airbox was purchased by the PO 21 years ago at either pelican, performance, or vertex. I have a receipt for the install but not the purchase. The PO doesn't remember ordering anything other than a stock airbox for the year.

Looks like you have two choices:
1. Stay with the existing setup, repair the damaged air box using screws washers and locknuts to hold the two haves of the air box together after using a fuel safe gasket sealer. Use plastex 3000 or epoxy to seal the outside of the joined two halves. Cost under $50.00 2. Purchase a new correct air box with a spider and new rubber couplings. Cost over $500. In my own case, I repaired my original air box and added a used spider to the box. If I found that I had the wrong air box I would have invested the funds an bought the correct air box.
