First De and mechanical failure
Had a oil line burst right next to the carrara oil cooler. This sent oil all over the front wheel tire and rear wheel tire. We did a 180 and regained control. So I'm in the middle of removing the lines and am having a hard time removing the old lines form the cooler. What should I use to loosen the large nuts. They don't want to budge?
PB Blaster - heat - the correct size wrench. Be careful as they are easy to strip.
When all else fails, use a dremmel tool to cut the nut off. Be carferul not to mar the fittings on the cooler.
Cheers |
Get a really long cheater pipe. Have someone counter hold and put a little pressure on it. With a big cheater, a little goes a long way.
I'm sure that 180 was scary, epecially your first event. Here's me spinning... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8255978021102390938&q=VIR+944 |
leverage is definitely your friend when it comes to oil lines. 24" is about the minimum

OK, the diagnostician has to ask – Why did it fail? That is a very unusual failure, what happened? Are you sure the hose broke and not the cooler?
First, what year, model? Any mods? Was this on the first lap? Cold? Best, Grady |
1978sc. What failed is one of those flexible hoses that connect the hard lines to the cooler. the cooler is marked 87 so that is when the cooler was made. Is it possible that the cooler failed and caused the line to burst. I don't know? So I was just going to replace those two small flexible lines and fill it with oil and see if it works. What would you guys do?
okay I got the lines reconnected and found maybe two quarts of oil left in the car. Filled it wirth oil and it started right up seems to be idleing alright.
You might want to take it up to temp and verify the oil is in fact circulating through the cooler.
had it out on suday and the oil lines got hot so I know they are working and not leaking any more. brakes feel funny though

durring the de I had some problems with pulling on my brakes. they were puling to the left. Only when I was comming off the long straights when I was carring speed. Do you think that my oil line could have been spraying alittle when I had the speed way up and was reveing the engine harder. the brakes seemed to work okay at lower speeds. the Pocano's track is very curvy and not fast so You really only had one high speed corner where you braked hard from around a 100 miles an hour.
When is the last time fluid was changed and bled? You might want to verify a caliper isn't sticking as well.
changed the fluid the week before the event.
Also being that it was my first DE I wasn't getting on the brakes all that hard. Also it rained most of the time so we weren't pushing the cars all that hard. they bleed at this time. It was a three day event so maybe it is possible I needed to bleed them again but I'm new to all this and didn't have the equipment with me to try that.
Being that it was your first DE I would definitely inspect the calipers. My 89 Carrera's brakes were fine until my first day at the track. One of the calipers began leaking and developed a strong pull to the left.
