heat exchanger removal

Last post on 6-8-00 inquiring about 2.2 eng. rebuild. Thanks for the info: Warren, Leland, Roy. I now have all the books suggested other than the factory workshop manuals. After successfully dropping eng and trans together, (could not separate eng from trans when attempting to drop eng alone) I began to disassemble eng external components. Here is my problem: The bolts to the heat exchangers are frozen solid. I have broken one stud off at the head already. I am using Aero Kroil (Kano Laboratories) which is the best penetrating oil I have used. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks Joe Williams

Joe,
All I've gathered as information on these heat exchangers is that you have to torch the bolts untill they're red hot and try to unscrew them while hot. I've had the same problem with my '76 Carrera, and in the end decided not to change them (the change would have been performance oriented) until the engine really needed work.
As you're already in for a head rebuild, I wouldn't worry too much. In the end, the shop would do the same. Torch them, and what comes out is profit, the rest, well theres' a rebuild anyway.

I have had the same stud breaking dilema while removing my heat exchanger nuts (which ended up with the motor in a machine shop to remove the broken studs as they had broken off flush with the head). If possible I would suggest you try to us a nut splitter to remove the frozen nuts. This may save your studs which might be reusable or at least easier to remove if full length.

One of the posts that most clearly illustrated Warren's apparently extensive experience with cars, was a description of this nut removal procedure. Use the "rosebud" tip on your oxy/acetylene wand. Head the bolt or nut until it is CHERRY RED. Then put a good quality tool on the fastener and first turn it clockwise until it moves, ever so slightly. Then gently but firmly back it off.

This is the best ANYONE can do. This procedure is greatly superior to penetrating oil and cold removal.
