Update:
Steve called me today and said that they are putting in a new cam and some other parts and it shoud be done monday of next week. It looks like the person that worked on it before didn't make sure to lube those parts correctly last time......

While it's there, make sure it has the distributor vent update. The belt that drives the second distributor can break as a result of ozone buildup in the distributor belt housing. If this happens, you can send spark to one of the cylinders at the wrong time and cause broken rings and/or pistons. This was my first diagnosis from your symptoms.

Update,
They decide to go ahead and check the other side of the engine, and replace that sides cam as well. It looks like it will be ready next Monday. As far as the vent , the car in a 94 so it already has the vent on it from the factory...but good call.
