Front Mounted Oil Cooler Question

Hi,

I had found a website that sold a piece of preformed sheet metal that allowed a couple more inches of room behind a front mounted oil cooler. They also sold Setrab oil coolers.

I can't find the link - I guess I have too many favorites.

Does anyone know what site I'm talking about?

It was a piece of black painted sheetmetal that you welded into the front trunk between the bumper and the spare tire.

Or you can make your own with some Home Depot sheetmetal and some pop rivets... Lou

I got mine from Chuck at Elephant, I believe it is the same part as TRE has.

Cheers

Perfect. The Elephant Racing is exactly the part I'm looking for.

I'm relocating my a/c condenser up there. It's a street car. I'm also going to put in twin 5.2" SPAL fans. I mocked it up yesterday and they'll fit just fine.

How did you guys mount the screen onto the front bumper?

I'm planning on using Electroformed Wire Cloth from McMaster Carr for the grill material. I was thinking about surface mounting it to get clearance for the fans.

Todd,
From where did you buy the fans? How much are they?

I cut up a rear engine lid grill in my project to cover the hole. I made mounting brackets from stainless steel and epoxied them into the bumper. Looks factory.

Thanks Jon,

Here's some shots of my not so un-molested front tub. I welded in 1/8" brackets to hold the cooler in front of the TRE pan mod.
I used 1" rubber spacers to isolate the cooler from vibration.
AND I had the hole in the bumper enlargened to flow more air for cooling.

Thanks guys.

Doug, that's pretty... I think I'll do that if I can. I ordered the fans straight off the SPAL-USA website. I think it's www.spal-usa.com

The 5.2" fan is the one. It's 2.3" deep and 5.2" in diameter. My mockup fits through the opening perfectly. I don't think I'll be able to use the Porsche grill though because that's inletted into the front of the bumper too much. I think I'll have to use a mesh screen with a fabbed up frame that I surface mount to the front of the bumper to make it work. That'll give me another couple of mm's to fit the fans in. When the fans get here, I'll mock it up again and post photo's.

Also remember that my a/c condenser has a thinner cross section than your oil cooler.

Lou, I think you're giving up some rigidity. I would consider welding in heavier guage metal to recover the rigidity. The 911 is already pretty flexible in this area and that's a whole lot of sheet metal missing.

Todd,
Can you install the fans behind the cooler, rather than in front?
thanks for the info on the fans. The fans are push / pull, right?

Doug

Dunno.

I had to order the fan as a push. There's a separate pn for the pull.

I can't find the pan mod on the tre website... It looks different from the elephant racing one. Could you still put the jack in it's stock location? Ditto with the spare.
