new noise; a/c blower related?

well, i'm cruising down the road today with the a/c blasting, and all of a sudden i start hearing this loud, shrieking noise coming from somewhere underneath the dash... it's intermittent. will just come and go. sounds like something scraping on a rotating part at high speed. don't hear the a/c blower slowing at all.

where do i start, fellas? :-)

Well it might depend on what Year your car was built. My 89 911 has a little fan blower at the front of the car right by the battery. It blows air on the a/c condencer under the front of the car. It somtimes has a high pitch squeal, probbly because its rubbing aginst the housing. I just havn't had time to fix it yet.
Good Luck

Sounds like you have a bearing on a fan under the dash going South. The blower in the nose for the A/C by the battery usually does not make enough noise for you to hear it unless you are stopped. When the noise starts, turn the blower switch on the console to a different speed and if the noise changes, then its the blower for the A/C in the underdash or cockpit area.

If you pull the motor out, a good parts store can sometimes match the motor with a cheaper VW or Audi unit if Pelican does not have a parts interchange list.

Good luck,

JA

what's interesting is that the noise is not always at the same pitch, even if the fan is at the same speed. it is always loud, though. the pitch of the noise is not changing with the speed of the blower. it only happens with the a/c on, though.

On my 83SC the exact noise was caused by
the front condenser blower motor,located
in the center of my trunk, easy to get to
under the carpet, lift metal door andit's the
black plastic box looking thing, you can
get the motor and replace it yourself.
$80.00 and a couple of hours labor.

Guys,
The little steel fan down near the battery can rub on the combustible plastic and start a fire. It did on a friends Carrera, so snap off the little clips that hold the 2 halfs together, and file off the tight plastic. Start it and be sure it's ok and then do the living happily ever after routine!!

just came from the garage after trying to pinpoint the source of this... i'm having a _really_ hard time figuring out where the noise is coming from exactly, cause it will not do it at all while the car is not moving. i'm not sure it's the condenser blower, cause it seems to be quiet in the trunk area. any suggestions on how i could pinpoint this for sure?

another clue: while driving the car, i can hear some sort of loose 'jangling' sound coming from somewhere under the dash; is always the loudest with the a/c blower on high.

thanks everyone for your help!
