Follow up to hot temp A/C question
Since we got sidetracked by trying to start a band (and I shamelessly offered to sell a guitar) I thought I would try to get us back on track.
Has anyone tried the new product from Pelican? It is a scoop to vent air to the oil cooler and mounts in the hole where the right clearance light goes. What about just removing the light for the summer? Thanks! |

Bill:
I have seen this advertised, and it looks interesting. But I have not yet tried the "Scoop". However, when I go to the track, I remove my right turn signal assembly (using a trailer hitch quick disconnect), and it takes all of 5 minutes to do so. I also remove the H1 headlight assembly, and have cut the headlight bucket out, so that air goes through that orifice also. Then I cover the headlight opening with an old headlight trim ring, behind which I have placed wire mesh to keep stones out. And guess what, even with all these openings, and a Terbatrol oil cooler, my temperatures still approach 250+ degrees F. all too easily on Hot August Days (reminds me of a Neil Diamond album!). I am still looking for a 1987 or later Carrera oil cooler, BTW. So, have not tried the scoop, but I'm not convinced that a "scoop" will get more air through that opening than just the opening itself. Try removing the turn signal, and then running some controlled experiments (same ambient temperature, same load on the engine, etc.). Otherwise, buy the scoop, it is cheap, and you might feel better, though I'm not convinced it IS better.......Andras |

I'll chime in. I tried the scoop and had just so-so results with it. I have the late Carrera cooler w/ fan on my SC. I finally cut a vent out of the valence to get more air to the cooler. I tried the scoop, too, and it helped but didn't keep the car as cool as I would like. On my car, I figure it would drop the temp by about 10 deg. But the scoop didn't produce enough airflow to reduce the temps after they rose in stop & go traffic. It did help keep the temps from rising while moving.
I think with the scoop, it's going to be a case of YMMV, rather than a blanket, "Yes, it works/no, it doesn't" statement. But on my car, running the fan cooled the temps better than the scoop while moving. IMO, the more air you can get to the cooler in a straight line, the better for cooling. Greg |
